This book is the result of a co-design project in a class in the Masters of Education program at the University of Calgary. The course, and the resulting book, focus primarily on the safe and ethical use of technology in digital learning environments. The course was organized according to four topics based on Farrow’s (2016) Framework for the Ethics of Open Education and discusses Artificial Intelligence (AI) , social networking services (SNS), 3D printing, resource sharing, adaptive learning systems, STEM, assistive technologies, admissions, and communications. In each of the nine chapters, the authors discuss the connection to the value of technology in education, and practical possibilities of learning technologies for inclusive, participatory, democratic, and pluralistic educational paradigms.

This text provides the student with an introduction to communication in a business and professional setting with the focus on exploring the common human communication behaviors that are at play in organizations as well as in life. The text is divided into five parts that cover the process of human communication, organizational communication and culture, interpersonal communication, interviewing, communicating in groups and teams, meetings, and building effective presentations.Originally, the development of these materials arose from the desire of the Speech Communication Discipline at El Paso Community College to provide SPCH 1321 students with a cost-effective textbook that was similar in content to the other textbook choices. This textbook is a revision of the initial OER materials and adds new information from a variety of OER sources.  

This course prepares students who are unfamiliar with computer applications to use the Internet for research and communication. Microsoft Office® programs will be used to prepare business letters, newsletters and spreadsheets. Focus will be on formatting and content. Communication is the heart of business. Short emails, complex reports, private chats, impassioned pitches, formal presentations, and team meetings move information and ideas around an organization, define strategy, and drive decisions. Business communication is concise, direct, clear, and compelling.

Before I developed the OER for this course, I researched various textbooks and interviewed several former students who had their own digital marketing agency and/or had recent work experience in digital marketing. From that research, I identified 14 topics to include in the course. This number works well with different term lengths: 1 topic per week for 15-week course (with a certification exam serving as the final exam in week 15); 2 topics per week in the 7-week term; 3 topics per week (2 in Week 1 to allow for setting up software/accounts needed for class) in 5-week summer term. I joined the HubSpot Education Partners Program to provide students with free access to an enterprise-level subscription to HubSpot’s CRM platform (used by over 150,000 businesses worldwide). This allowed me to supplement their publically-available lessons and certifications (HubSpot Academy) with access to the actual platform. I developed three “application exercises” that provide students with hands-on experience with a commercial CRM platform (designing a landing page, writing a blog post, composing & sending & evaluating a promotional email message). Content selected consists of videos, blogs, ebooks, toolkits, and interactive lessons/tools related to digital marketing. All included videos are ADA-compliant (include human-generated captions). HubSpot video lessons also include PowerPoint slides and a transcript; some even provide support for multiple languages (which may be helpful for international students). The following sections identify the title of the learning resource, URL (link), creator, type of content, date, length (if applicable) and a description that summarizes the content and explains why I selected it. Digital marketing is a fast-paced, dynamic field; most traditional books contain outdated information before they are even published. Using OER allows the instructor to quickly adjust learning resources to fit developments & advancements in the field.
