This lesson centers around the How AI Works: Neural Networks video from the How AI Works video series. Watch this video first before exploring the lesson plan.

Students learn how neural networks work. They first discuss an example of an experience that recommends things to you. They then use a widget that recommends videos based on one person. Students watch a video explaining neural networks. They use an updated widget to adjust the weights of each person. Finally, students discuss the need for diverse perspectives when creating recommendation systems.

This lesson can be taught on its own, or as part of a 7-lesson sequence on How AI Works. Duration: 45 minutes

This digital textbook was developed through an "open pedagogy" approach with over 100 Austin Community College students contributing footnotes, introductory chapters, digital learning objects, and test bank questions with a student audience in mind. 86 chapters cover 1,000 years of British literature featuring primary source texts commonly assigned for survey courses of British Literature (ENGL 2322). Additionally, assignments and student samples of work are included to help teachers interested in adopting the practices that led to its creation.

The curriculum supports students to work with existing data covering psychology, health, earth science, government, business, education, biology, ecology and more. From existing data, students are able to pose questions of personal interest and then use statistical software (e.g. SAS, R, Python, Stata, SPSS) to answer them. The e-book is presented in pdf format for ease of use across platforms. It can also be customized by downloading and editing the .iba file (available through the link below) using the free “iBook Author” software.

This resource contains a news article, a facilitation guide, and two activity handouts. Students flip coins, gather and analize data, and gain an appreciation for the challenge of generating truly random data. Then the students are guided through forming a statistical hypothesis, gathering and analyzing evidence, and interpreting their analysis using p-values. The lesson ends with a discussion of Benford’s Law. This activity aligns with MATH 1342 Learning Outcome 8: Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.
