In this guide, students’ exploration of AI is framed within the context of ethical considerations and aligned with standards and concepts, and depths of understanding that would be appropriate across various subject areas and grade levels in K–12. Depending on the level of your students and the amount of time you have available, you might complete an entire project, pick and choose from the listed activities, or you might take students’ learning further by taking advantage of the additional extensions and resources provided for you. For students with no previous experience with AI education, exposure to the guided learning activities alone will create an understanding of their world that they likely did not previously have. And for those with some background in computer science or AI, the complete projects and resources will still challenge their thinking and expose them to new AI technologies and applications across various fields of study.

Copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted to a creator preventing others from copying, distributing, publicly performing, adapting, or doing almost anything else except read/view/listen to a work without the copyright holder's expressed permission. Its purpose is to protect the creator’s rights for a certain period and is granted in our constitution. Copyright, in the United States, is automatic from the moment something original is set in a tangible form that can be perceived by other humans or machines, meaning the moment is written down, recorded, performed for others, etc. Copyright lasts a long time and is balanced between a holder's intellectual property rights and public interests. These public interest exceptions are for parody, criticism, and for a disability as well as anything that falls under Fair Use or the TEACH Act. Copyright is also limited since you cannot copyright facts, figures, or ideas - just the expressions of those things. It also doesn't cover intellectual property that is better protected by patent or trademark law (think inventions or branding).

This two-part unit provides instructors with materials to encourage student development of information literacy skills. The unit can be understood as supplemental materials for the OER textbook Informed Arguments: A Guide to Writing and Research with particular focus on the research aspect of writing and argumentation, or the materials could be useful on its own, for instructors who do not teach with the Informed Arguments textbook. It addresses, most specifically, how to find and evaluate source material. It covers things like types of sources, biases, peer-review processes, and other information literacy skills helpful for successful college writing. It includes 1) general instructor notes, 2) an online discussion activity, 3) a quiz about evaluation of sources, 4) a Research Journal (short essay) assignment, 5) a rubric for the short essay, and 6) a further information resource guide for faculty about information literacy and the college classroom.
