Poverty, disease, hunger, climate change, war, existential risks, and inequality: The world faces many great and terrifying problems. It is these large problems that our work at Our World in Data focuses on.

Thanks to the work of thousands of researchers around the world who dedicate their lives to it, we often have a good understanding of how it is possible to make progress against the large problems we are facing. The world has the resources to do much better and reduce the suffering in the world.

We believe that a key reason why we fail to achieve the progress we are capable of is that we do not make enough use of this existing research and data: the important knowledge is often stored in inaccessible databases, locked away behind paywalls and buried under jargon in academic papers.

The goal of our work is to make the knowledge on the big problems accessible and understandable. As we say on our homepage, Our World in Data is about Research and data to make progress against the world’s largest problems.

PHIL2306 for OERTX: A Collection of Open Education Readings in Philosophical Ethics with Topic Introductions
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

Ethics shows students how to engage in the sort of self-reflection that leads to greater personal and social responsibility. What should I do? How should I live? How should I treat others? What is most important? – Having more of our citizens step back and think more about these questions is of service both to employers and to society at large, and likely improves the student’s own chances of living a good life.

This is a collection of OER readings in philosophical ethics, intended primarily for the high transfer course (under the tccns) PHIL2306 "Introduction to Ethics", and made possible by a GEER grant from the THECB. The collection aims to be comprehensive enough to suit the different teaching interests of different ethics instructors. The readings are organized according to the general topic area, which are separated by chapters, with several readings per chapter. Each chapter also has an introduction that introduces the general topic and the other readings in the chapter, and which supplements with explanations of points and concepts that are within the topic but are not well covered by the other readings.

Purpose
Personality refers to the long-standing traits and patterns that propel individuals to consistently think, feel, and behave in specific ways; it is what makes each individual unique. Psychologists study the factors that contribute to personality development. These factors are varied and include biological and social influences. The purpose of this project is to better understand what personality is and how it is influenced.

Plato's Euthyphro

This is a complete contemporary translation of Plato's Euthyphro. While the dialogue is made famous by the Euthyphro dilemma, the text offers a rich picture of the difference between relying on one's prior knowledge (like Euthyphro) and remaining open to inquiry (like Socrates).

Plato's Republic (Book I)
Only Sharing Permitted

Rating

This is an excellent contemporary translation of the first book of Plato's Republic. It introduces the dialogue's central question ("What is justice?") and portrays Socrates as embodying the ignorance for which he is known while refuting the definitions proffered by his interlocutors. Since many philosophers think that this book was originally a standalone dialogue that was subsequently connected to the remainder of the text, it is a great option for classes to read (more or less) a full dialogue that features multiple interlocutors. Woods' translation has the further advantage of not Latinizing Plato's Greek, which may make pronunciation less intimidating for students who are challenged by the interlocutor's names.
