Did your mother call you to tell you about that new miracle cure for Alzheimer's disease? Did your Facebook feed pop up with an article on a factory farm of pigs intended for human transplant harvesting? Did one of your friends breathlessly tell you that there's a new spider that's going to kill us all? You might have heard any or all of these stories, but there's one thread connecting all of them: they're not true.

The ability to tell accurate news from fake news is an important skill that you'll use for the rest of your life. This LibGuide will give you valuable insight in telling fact from fiction online, plus a chance to exercise your newfound skills.

CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

"Fluency Disorders Notes for Speech-Language Pathology Assistant" is a practical resource that caters specifically to a 1-credit-hour course for SLPAs or 1/3 of a 3-credit-hour course in communication sciences and disorders. It aims to provide overviews, screening methods, and remediation approaches with some samples to guide future SLPAs in addressing fluency disorders. The booklet meets coursework requirements and allows for customizing learning objectives to support aspiring SLPAs effectively. As such, this booklet does not intend to compete against commercially available textbooks with comprehensive information about the targeted and peripheral topics.

Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, the authors embarked on a mission to create their first Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook. This initiative was born out of a commitment to alleviate the financial burden associated with study materials and to help aspiring SLPs and SLPAs progress toward certification without financial constraints. The authors view the development of OER materials as an ongoing endeavor driven by their commitment to supporting and valuing their future colleagues.

This book incorporates images, illustrations, and information from various OER that allow others to adopt or remix their information in part or whole. The information from other OER sources is color-coded in black ink, and the content developed by the authors is presented in blue ink. Citations for all images, illustrations, and information that the authors do not originate are provided on each page. The authors sincerely appreciate the work of those who have shared their valuable resources under the Creative Commons (CC) license, as their contributions have enriched this booklet and fostered a sense of community among its readers.

The authors of this textbook aspire to ignite a sense of fascination in beginning learners as they delve into the captivating realm of communication sciences and disorders. With this goal in mind, the authors have made this textbook readily accessible to future colleagues who seek to acquire foundational knowledge that can be applied in serving individuals with communication disorders.

Foundations of Epidemiology

This book is intended to provide a basic introduction to epidemiologic methods and epidemiologic thinking. After reading this book, you should be able to read an epidemiologic study, understand what the authors did and why, and identify what they found. You will also have the tools to assess the quality of that study—how good is the evidence? What are potential sources of bias, and how might those have affected the results? This book will not teach you enough to be able to design and conduct your own epidemiologic studies—that level of understanding requires several years of specialized training. However, being able to read and understand the scientific literature about human health will allow you to apply that understanding to your own work in a nuanced, sophisticated way.

This course reviews the key genomic technologies and computational approaches that are driving advances in prognostics, diagnostics, and treatment. Throughout the semester, emphasis will return to issues surrounding the context of genomics in medicine including: what does a physician need to know? what sorts of questions will s/he likely encounter from patients? how should s/he respond? Lecturers will guide the student through real world patient-doctor interactions. Outcome considerations and socioeconomic implications of personalized medicine are also discussed. The first part of the course introduces key basic concepts of molecular biology, computational biology, and genomics. Continuing in the informatics applications portion of the course, lecturers begin each lecture block with a scenario, in order to set the stage and engage the student by showing: why is this important to know? how will the information presented be brought to bear on medical practice? The final section presents the ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genomic medicine. A vision of how genomic medicine relates to preventative care and public health is presented in a discussion forum with the students where the following questions are explored: what is your level of preparedness now? what challenges must be met by the healthcare industry to get to where it needs to be?

Men’s health is an important topic as males can be at a greater risk for certain diseases and conditions than females. Advocating for positive behaviors and better education on men’s health topics is vital to both quality and quantity of life. They need to visit medical care regularly for age-related screenings and take action in preventing certain diseases. This book was written with men in mind; the goal is to educate men (or anyone concerned about them) on how to maintain health, prevent disease, and know when to seek care. Each chapter explores a different issue and provides an insight into men’s health through text and visuals such as infographics.
