This resource contains a news article, a facilitation guide, and two activity handouts. Students flip coins, gather and analize data, and gain an appreciation for the challenge of generating truly random data. Then the students are guided through forming a statistical hypothesis, gathering and analyzing evidence, and interpreting their analysis using p-values. The lesson ends with a discussion of Benford’s Law. This activity aligns with MATH 1342 Learning Outcome 8: Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.

Sample MATH 2412 PreCalculus OpenStax Syllabus

This is an example of a redesigned course that uses the OpenStax PreCaculus Textbook. Emphasis is placed on the structure of course (which is not conics centric) and how homework is implemented. To avoid the financial responsiblity of the student or higher education institution purchasing publisher online homework services like Pearson's MyMathLab, ConnectMath or Aleks; students are assigned exercises from the textbook that have answers available. The strategy is to give access to the answers of the problems so that the students have to prove how the answer was obtained. This allows the students some immediate feedback if their written process does not obtain the solution given in the back of the textbook. This allows the student to recognize that a process, operation or strategy was carried out incorrectly which can be used to draw attention that a question needs to be raised during the next lecture or additional assistance may be required on their journey to mastery of the content.

Introduction to a selection of mathematical topics that are not covered in traditional mechanical engineering curricula, such as differential geometry, integral geometry, discrete computational geometry, graph theory and optimization techniques. Emphasis on basic ideas and on applications in mechanical engineering. Selection will change every year. This course forms an introduction to a selection of mathematical topics that are not covered in traditional mechanical engineering curricula, such as differential geometry, integral geometry, discrete computational geometry, graph theory, optimization techniques, calculus of variations and linear algebra. The topics covered in any particular year depend on the interest of the students and instructor. Emphasis is on basic ideas and on applications in mechanical engineering. This year, the subject focuses on selected topics from linear algebra and the calculus of variations. It is aimed mainly (but not exclusively) at students aiming to study mechanics (solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, energy methods etc.), and the course introduces some of the mathematical tools used in these subjects. Applications are related primarily (but not exclusively) to the microstructures of crystalline solids.
