First-Gen Longhorn is a term at the University of Texas that describes any student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) do not have a four-year degree or higher from an institution of higher learning in the United States. In the fall of 2021, first-generation college students at UT Austin accounted for 23% of the undergraduate student body. The mission of the First-Gen Equity program is to create a community on campus for first-generation students by providing them with a multi-tiered support network and an immersive layering of academic, social and professional experiences, workshops, resources, and events. First-Generation students at The University of Texas at Austin are able to opt-in to any of the following whole-person developmental services provided by First-Gen Equity, free of charge:

-Transition & Success Coaching (mentorship program)
-Monthly First-Gen Social Connection, Future-Planning & Skill-building Events

First-time-in-college students enroll a one-hour first year seminar course: UGST 1100: Applications of Learning. Students can enroll in special sections for Trailblazer Elite students or in a meta-major block of two other courses identified as relevant for a meta-major the students have identified. For first-generation college students, adjusting to college can be difficult and may lead to lower graduation rates. Despite the availability of resources on-campus at St. Edward's University, there were obstacles that often prevented its first-generation college students from making the best use of resources. In response to this, in 2020, St. Edward's University implemented programming to remove barriers to success for students who are first in the family to go to college. Recognizing that there is financial need, little family background in higher education, and social and academic stress, First to GOat provides holistic programming that emphasizes mentoring, building community and belonging, leadership and character development, academic and career readiness, financial assistance and literacy, and personal health and wellness. First to GOat develops
and provides a supportive, inclusive community that values and celebrates their identity.

FLP is committed to developing the strengths of humble and ambitious first year students, so that they persist at the institution and in making a difference on campus and in the world. Students will deeply understand and explore The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership and the Social Change Model of Leadership. Students explore and analyze varying leadership behaviors and articulate their own values and vision. Student participants also employ an appreciation for other points of view, advancing their own views that guide relationships and decisions while at the university. Students apply observation, conflict management, dialogue and active listening techniques as a means of understanding and engaging with others. This semester-long exploratory cohort-based program consists of 14 workshops students attend as well as a day long leadership retreat. Students must attend the retreat as well as 5 of these core workshops in addition to 10 exploratory events outlined in the syllabus to expose them to the different co-curricular offerings at the institution. Students that successfully complete the program are honored at the end of the year.

Recognizing the importance of STEM education in preparing the increasingly diverse generations that will make up the American workforce, this project strives to generate STEM student success at Texas State University (TXST) for Hispanic and Low Income (HLI) students who will become our next scientific and technical professionals. There are four primary activities designed to address persistent challenges in STEM education and career attainment for HLI students. Activity 1 will create a Peer Education Program with Success Coaches that will serve all incoming HLI freshman and transfer students in their first year at TXST who are identified through a predictive analytics factor-specific model as needing high-support during their transition to college. Activity 2 will improve the transfer navigation process and increase transfer matriculation to TXST through creation of a Transfer Articulation and Navigation Center. Center staff will initiate new transfer articulation agreements with 2-year HSIs, produce an online repository of course equivalency guides and other information pertinent for transfer students, and provide direct student transfer advising to facilitate the transfer process. Activity 3 will create a STEM Workforce Advisory Council to build collaborations with STEM employers leading to expanded Co-Op and work-based experiences for HLI STEM students; additionally, a new Work-based Experience Preparatory program will be implemented to provide targeted students with professional development improving their competitiveness for employment upon graduation. Activity 4 will provide professional development in culturally responsive teaching methods for STEM faculty teaching core courses that will enable faculty to make lasting changes to their instructional methods to improve HLI students' success.

HSI L.E.A.D.S. Program is designed to provide support and encouragement for Hispanic and low-income students at Temple College (Temple) to pursue high-paying, high-demand, STEM careers in the central Texas region. The Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI)- Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and Articulation Programs, proposed to increase the number of Hispanic and other low-income students attaining STEM degrees and credentials using a two-pronged approach to create a culture of STEM that:

The SMU Hegi Career Leaders (HCL) program, established in 2018, is a 4-year advanced professional development program, which provides selected students with access to specialized career counseling sessions, in which they set and track career goals, and attend targeted professional development and employer events.

The program is open to applicants of all years and majors at SMU, and is hosted by the Hegi Family Career Development Center, which places a priority on offering students support to invest in their career development for success after graduation.

The Holistic Exploration of Careers by Hands-on Opportunities (HECHO) program is a comprehensive career preparedness initiative that includes hands-on learning opportunities for first generation and economically disadvantaged students. The Integrated Education and Training (IET)- Contextualized Learning allows students seeking a high school equivalency credential or English language attainment the opportunity to participate and complete a credential of value that could ultimately lead to a career advancement and/or 'stackable' higher education degrees. The IET skills training leads to a high wage, high demand occupation and runs simultaneously with the GED and ESL program, additionally including a course that is focused on the reading, writing, verbal, and/or math skills needed to achieve and exceed in the training and career field. The IET program allows a student to accelerate the transition between an academic readiness program into workforce preparation training, which ultimately leads to credential completion and employment. The International Leadership Program (ILP) is designed for students looking to enhance their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. The program provides opportunities for professional development while serving the global SMU community. This program is open to ALL globally-minded SMU students - domestic, international, graduate, and undergraduate. SMU's International Student & Scholar Services office (ISSS) is home to the International Leadership Program. It is the goal of the ISSS office for international students to have meaningful experiences at SMU and to help them navigate and take advantage of the resources offered to students. Leaders are always ready to offer advice about living in the U.S., answer any questions about resources off/on-campus, and serve as a welcoming guide to new students. International Leaders enhance their leadership skills through regular leadership trainings, leading projects of their own design that enhance the international student experience, and providing support for in-person and virtual programs hosted by the International Student and Scholar Services Office. Participants are challenged to think critically about gaps in the support of global students and use this analysis to strategize programs or resources to address them. In doing so alongside their cohort peers, leaders develop the skills necessary to effectively work with those of different educational, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.

The LEADS Program: Learn, Experience, Achieve Defined Success, is a multi-faceted first year experience (FYE) program that is designed to create a foundation and culture of learning and engagement for students at Howard College. The program is implemented through the fall and spring semesters of each academic year. The program focuses on 1) acquisition and enhancement of academic skills, 2) career exploration and plan development, and 3) peer, campus, and community engagement. LEADS incorporates a mandatory zero week orientation as well as a student success course which meets graduation requirements for the college. Career clusters are created in alliance with the college's Pathways for Success model and have no more than 15 students in each group. Students participate in career clusters with their peers with similar career interests.

The program is designed as a holistic first year experience that will engage students in their college campus, their communities, and their academic experiences. It fosters student commitment to learning and to actively participating in their academic and career planning so that their experiences have meaning and purpose as they move through the educational journey. Each student will work both individually as well as in group settings in all segments of the program.

The focus of the project at Lamar State College Orange (LSCO) is to plan for the creation and expansion of support for students outside of the classroom. Our campus is working to remove barriers for our students and allow them to focus on their course work. TVCC faculty bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the TVCC student body. Advancing opportunities for mentorships and students to demonstrate their learned skills by networking with their community is a critical aspect to encourage student engagement during classroom instruction. The Learning Symposium offers opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills to create projects meaningful to them and the community they care about. The concept of the learning symposium is new at TVCC, but resembles the concept of a student research symposium at 4-year universities. The goals for creating an annual symposium are to:
• Provide a structure for faculty – student mentorships in specific content areas which students are passionate and interested in.
• Inspire cross-circular learning experiences.
• Provide a focus on academic achievement for TVCC students.
• Increase community involvement with TVCC students.
• Foster deeper connections between Terrell, Kaufman, Athens, Palestine, and dual credit students. (The symposium would be hosted by rotating TVCC campuses in Athens, Terrell, and Palestine yearly, with dual credit and embedded faculty encouraged to participate.)
• Gain regional recognition from other colleges within the second and third years by offering invitations for their students to join.

Students and faculty are encouraged to think of ways they can connect classroom instruction to service opportunities in their communities and demonstrate skills they have developed. This is known as Applied Learning Opportunities.
We are striving to recognize the knowledge students bring to the learning environment and connect with communities and seek real-life experiences. By encouraging students to participate in the Learning Symposium, we are asking students to apply what they are learning to a whole task in a form that is relevant and appropriate to their goals and skills. Areas in which to frame a project include, but are not limited to: Service Learning/Community Service, Research/Field Study, Arts, Leadership, Civil Engagement, and Internships.

A panel of judges volunteer and are present during the symposium to view displays and participate during the demonstrations. Students’ submissions are judged within two categories:
• Most Impactful: $500 award
• Most Creative: $500 award

DELIVERY FORMAT: The program is in-person only.

PROGRAM SCALE: Medium-scale (reaches between 10 and 25 percent of its target population)

APPROXIMATE PARTICIPANTS SERVED IN 2021-22: 100

HOW TO ENROLL: Participants submit a proposal with a faculty or staff mentor.

EVALUATION STATUS: Data related to program outcomes are currently being internally collected

Lone Star College-North Harris Mi Casa Es Su Casa (CASA) Empowering Hispanic Students to Connect, Acclimate, Succeed, and Achieve

Initially funded by a Title V grant for Hispanic-Serving Institutions from the US Department of Education, CASA is Connecting students to the campus community, Acclimating them to the rigors of academic life, helping them Succeed academically, and preparing them to Achieve and compete in college and beyond. The program guides students through the four CASA phases through three initiatives. Information Technology Enhanced Multidisciplinary Academic Learning Lounges (iMALLS) and the Center for Academic Advising and Transition (CAST) are designed to connect students to resources and opportunities to improve academic preparedness while Meaningfully Aligned Targeted Curriculum for Hispanic Students (MATCH) ensures students are receiving best-fit instruction based on proven methods. These three initiatives encompass twelve activities to engage students in research-based programs that facilitate in students a sense of belonging, influence, competence and efficacy. MATCH activities have assisted in increasing the number of students graduating with a degree or certificate within three years from a baseline of 14% to 26%. Hispanic completion was 25%. CAST tutoring and advising activities assisted in increasing the three-year transfer rate of students from a baseline of 6% to 12%. Hispanic transfer was 11%. iMALL activities have assisted in increasing the fall-to-fall persistence of FTIC fulltime students by 7% over the 2014 baseline of 50%. Hispanic student persistence was 61%.

APPROXIMATE PARTICIPANTS SERVED IN 2021-22: 2,400 as of May 2022

HOW TO ENROLL: All stakeholders have access to most of the activities in this program with the exception of Puente (MI Casa) and the English/Spanish Interpreter Program.
