The Peer Leaders within Residence Life program provides opportunities for SMU upper-class students to serve in a leadership capacity while acting as liaisons for campus departments. Partnering campus departments include the Office of Wellbeing, Engage Dallas, the Office of General Education, and the Office of the Chaplain & Religious Life. Each residential community primarily serves first and second-year students who are the primary target audience for the peer leader program. There are four peer leaders dedicated to each residential community, a Peer Academic Leader, Engage Dallas Student Director, Spiritual Life Mentor, and a Wellbeing Education Student Team representative. Each peer leader partners with the Residential Community Director and Faculty in Residence to facilitate monthly programs focused on well-being, academic support, spiritual development, and local community service engagement.

The Peer Leader program aims to ensure students are aware of and utilizing on-campus support resources, are connected socially on-campus and to the local Dallas community, and are supported in their transition to college in order to promote holistic wellness that leads to student success and retention.

Peer Mentors have successfully completed the Learning Frameworks course and now work closely with the First-Year Seminar instructor to provide peer mentoring and instructional support to one section of the Learning Frameworks's first-year and transfer students. Coordinating with an assigned Learning Frameworks faculty member to prepare for each weekly lesson, peer mentors serve as liaisons between students and faculty. Peer mentors are also clearinghouses for student success resources and campus events. They exemplify critical thinking by modeling class assignments, assessing weekly writing assignments, and facilitating small group discussions. During weekly peer mentor-student conversations about academic success tips, co-curricular opportunities, and targeted workshops, they create an atmosphere of trust, responsibility, and encouragement with students.

The First-Year Seminar Peer Mentor Program also benefits peer mentor cohorts. Peer mentors develop leadership skills vital to college and professional success; receive mentorship from faculty supervisors; create a close community within their cohort through shared trainings and experiences; cultivate fairness by engaging in challenging assumptions about cross- and intra-cultural diversity; and participate in professional development opportunities such as presenting at academic conferences, moderating First-Year Seminar events, and networking with campus and community leaders.

"Power Up + Tech Up Program aims to equip students with the power (soft) and technical skills that will empower them to initiate well-paying and rewarding careers. The program features online, self-paced training programs that lead to certifications and industry-recognized credentials in power and technical skills. Students access these programs free of charge through our partnerships with CareerSpots, Revature (a tech talent firm), Google and Coursera.

Power Up + Tech Up aims to provide a co-curricular opportunity for transfer students to gain power skills experience and industry-recognized credentials and articulate these skills as they land their first jobs upon graduation. Objectives of the Power Up + Tech Up Program include increased knowledge and awareness of power skills, an increase in participation in technical skills training and certification programs by the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) students by twenty percent, and an 80% employment rate of Power Up + Tech Up students within the first three months of graduation.

The Power Up + Tech Up Program targets transfer students from UTA’s three largest college partners—Collin College, Dallas College, and Tarrant County College. UTA has excellent relationships with all three colleges and will continue to strengthen the connection through the enhanced services provided to these students participating in the program. Students from all majors will be encouraged to participate. "

The Priddy Foundation Scholars Program provides scholarships for first generation students, in addition to supporting students throughout their four years of education at Midwestern State University. Opportunities for "The Priddy Scholars" include student success workshops, career planning assistance and study abroad. Program activities include the following:

First year: Reside in a first-year residence hall. Participate in a first-year learning community. Participate in weekly meetings covering topics such as time management, money management, working with up to date technology, and study skills. Complete an interest inventory and work with the professional staff in the Career Management Center to select a major.

Sophomore year: Reside in a scholar community in Legacy Hall. Select and complete a community service project as a group. Work with the Career Management Center on career options.

The Primary Care Pathway Program (PCPP) is a partnership between the University of North Texas Health Science Center, University of North Texas, Midland College and Midland Memorial Hospital. The program seeks to provide physicians in the Midland-Odessa and West Texas region by offering an accelerated pathway from a community college to an osteopathic medical school. Students complete their first two years at Midland College, the third year at the University of North Texas, and the final four years at the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to the accelerated curriculum, the program provides advisement and experiences to prepare students for the rigors of medical school. Project Maestros is a title V HSI grant funded program from the Department of Education. Project Maestros seeks to enhance the transfer student and teacher pipelines. Maestros provides transfer navigation for all prospective and incoming transfer students; this includes individual appointments and credit evaluation. Maestros supports pre-service teachers at Texas State University through professional development seminars focused on culture, community, and communication in the classroom. We offer certification exam test preparation options throughout the academic year as well. Reading the Globe is a program offered to our freshman class each year. Our students read a book set in a foreign country, discuss how the book’s author or narrator displays self-determination skills (self-awareness; self-regulation; self-advocacy;and self-empowerment); growth mindset; purpose and a sense of belonging. Students then engage in class discussion about these skills, how the author used them, and how they (the students) can learn and employ the skills to complete their education in a timely manner. At the end
of the semester, students may choose to enter a video and/or essay contest to show what they have learned about self-determination and how they would apply those skills when traveling to a foreign country. From the videos/essays, a pool of students is selected for an interview. From this group, 15 students are chosen for an all-expense paid trip to a foreign country-typically the country in which the book is set. During the trip, students are expected to identify and use self-determination skills and growth mindset, as well as develop a sense of purpose and belonging. Upon their return, students serve as a Reading the Globe Ambassadors for a period of one year. During this time, they are expected to mentor students in the incoming freshman class. They also choose a non-profit related to issues raised in the book they read; they engage in fund-raising activities and community service with their chosen non-profit as a way to practice their advocacy skills.

The University of St. Thomas (UST) Rising Stars Internship Program is designed to serve disadvantaged students with the resources they need to succeed in their academic endeavors while gaining hands-on experience to prepare them for the workforce upon graduation. Students in the Rising Stars program are paired with a corporate sponsor and work as an intern during the academic year to earn funds toward tuition. The funds from the internship, combined with the Rising Stars scholarship, and federal and state educational grants, allow students to attend UST with a little out-of-pocket cost for tuition.Through the Rising Stars program, students are empowered to reach their academic and personal goals by staying enrolled in and graduating from UST, along with developing the skills needed to be successful in a corporate environment. The Rising Stars Internship Program supports its students’ success through customized programming, professional development training, mentorship opportunities, and educational experiences.

Service-learning is utilized as a teaching method by faculty at UTEP as a way to help students meet class learning objectives, and to practice what they learn in the classroom out in the community. It is also utilized to help students develop professional preparedness skills, civic engagement mindset and social responsibility, and personal development awareness. Service-learning helps students persist through their education and to develop a sense of self in society.

Service-learning is integrated in over 400 course sections at UTEP and is adopted by over 300 faculty. At least one course in each department is community engaged or a service-learning course. Students in these courses are granted academic credit for their learning and participation in the experiences. Programming support for students and faculty is offered through the university's Center for Community Engagement which has existed since 1998.

The Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) Career Talk Series initiative features events with guest speakers representing multiple fields of study within the Social and Behavioral Sciences department umbrella. The talks are not limited to students who take classes within the SBS Department, but rather are open to students throughout the college.

In this initiative, guest speakers share their past experiences as college students and discuss their journeys toward their current careers. During the presentations, students have the opportunity to engage with the guest speakers to ask questions and gain more insight into careers that may have previously been unknown to them.

The SBS Career Talk events have been implemented and supported by the entire SBS department, with each discipline providing guest speakers and instructors to help facilitate the events. The events are promoted by each discipline of the SBS Department as well as the college so that students taking classes outside of the SBS department are encouraged to attend the Career Talk events. Attending these events allows the students to earn participation credit they can use on their Alamo Experience transcripts.

The Somos Unidos “ One Word Project" is a student success initiative designed to accelerate mentor training and knowledge to support first-generation students and positively increase student retention and graduation rates. In partnership with the UIW FLIGHT Mentor Center, this project further expands UIWs ability to improve outcomes for first-generation students through curricular and co-curricular programming as well as professional development for faculty and staff. The intent is to create a sense of belonging for our students and methods to help students develop confidence and their own voices, ultimately strengthening retention rates amongst first-generation students. The Somos Unidos “ One Word Project seeks to raise the UIW retention rate to its institutional goal of 75% and close the gap each semester between these underserved populations and all other groups combined.

64% of respondents identified as first-generation.
19% of respondents usually tell their classmates they are first generation, while 27% only reveal in relevant situations
63% of respondents felt their was more academic support than expected before starting at the university
The most important services most helpful for first generation students were identified as celebration events, advising support, and financial aid support.
A low awareness of support services for first generation students indicates the need for opportunities for the institution to increase efforts to help first generation students know what supports are available.

The Store is Baylor University's on-campus food pantry - a resource available to all enrolled Baylor University Students, but especially developed for our most underrepresented and high financial need students. Our objectives are both remedial and preventative.

Our remedial goals are primarily to ensure all Baylor Students have access to adequate food and nutrition while enrolled at Baylor, and that lack of access to food (or food insecurity) not become a barrier to retention. The Store gives students unlimited access to fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins, milk, eggs, pantry staples, snacks and personal hygiene products (including diapers for students who are parents of young children). Students are also connected to additional resources include allocating them with donated meal swipes they can use at our on-campus dining facilities, referring them to SNAP application assistance professionals, and other community and campus resources.

Another remedial focus of the Store is to tackle feelings of shame, social isolation, and a lack of belonging. We do this through community meals, advocacy and other events.

Our preventative objectives are focused on advocating for structural, systemic and policy changed that will create resilience to food insecurity for our 'campus ecosystem' as a whole, and mitigate food insecurity risk factors for individual students within it. Our goals include securing universal access to public transport for all enrolled students, advocating for efficient routes to and from the grocery store, and identifying and understanding other vulnerabilities of our campus eco-system and developing programs and resources to mitigate them.

Our program has created numerous collaborative and cross-discipline experiential learning opportunities for students through internship opportunities for student social workers, dietetics and nutrition, and public health students. Additionally, we provide many classes (like marketing, public relations, etc.) with numerous experiential learning opportunities in the form of semester-long practical projects or assignments.

Rebranded and launched in 2020, the Student Experience Internship (SEI) Program, formerly known as Student Employment Initiative, was created through the Career Center in partnership between Office of Student Success, Human Resources, Dean of Students, and Academic Advising. The SEI Program is an initiative that provides on-campus internship opportunities for undergraduate students to grow in skill, expand in learning, and realize their potential through an enriched internship experience.

The Student Experience Internship Program will:

1. Allow colleges and departments of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to develop and offer quality internship experiences with learning outcomes related to a student's field of study
2. Provide opportunities for department supervisors, faculty, and mentors to train and guide SEI talent throughout the entire program

4. Positively impact our students' time to graduate

Student Leadership Program (NSLS Chapter & Leadership Conference)

The Student Leadership Program consists of the local chapter of the National Society for Leadership and Success and the Annual Student Leadership Conference. The NSLS provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation in campus leadership events. Upon completion of the program, members receive their Foundations of Leadership certificate and take their place among student leaders on campus and across the country. Inducted members can list their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishment, including their resume. The Completion Center hosts an Annual Student Leadership Conference, co-hosted by NSLS and other NCTC Student Leaders. The conference provides students the opportunity to cultivate their leadership and professional skills through interactive keynote speakers, student testimonies, and success strategy breakout sessions. Many student leaders are involved in developing the conference content, and participation in the breakout sessions; with various topics related to student success.

The Basic Needs Center is a campus support component within the Division of Student Affairs. The center, which encompasses the Food Pantry, Dress for Success Hub, and the Community Resource Room, are designed to connect TLU students with essential resources that are necessary for their personal, academic, and career success. As a virtual and physical hub of services, The Center is focused on collaborating with on-campus and community partners to meet the basic needs of our students. We provide students with education to connect with resources that will help them to navigate local, state, and national resources in addition to helping support life and crisis situations.

DELIVERY FORMAT: The program has a hybrid format or has both online and in-person components.

PROGRAM SCALE: Medium-scale (reaches between 10 and 25 percent of its target population)

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: We have identified some students are impacted by food insecurity, especially students from low income and first generation backgrounds. In addition, students have difficulty navigating existing systems and processes that would give them access to meet their basic and career needs.

This course is required of all FTIC freshmen. It includes material on college success, a service learning project, and requirements to attend academic, health-related, and social events on campus. It also includes a financial literacy component and a unit on budgeting.

For students who are TSI-incomplete in math or English/reading, there are special sections of this course that include content-specific remediation. Those special sections are linked to gateway math and English courses and take the place of traditional remedial/developmental education.

The TRIO Student Support Services program (SSS) at Sul Ross State University is a student retention program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that serves 160 students per year.

The mission of the Student Support Services program is to provide supportive educational services that will assist students with an academic need that are low income, first generation, or have a documented disability to acquire a university college degree.

The program offers academic advising, career/major counseling, personal support, classroom instruction, academic workshops, tutoring, financial aid counseling, new student extended orientation, graduate admission assistance, social/cultural activities, and much more.

The TRIO program at Sul Ross State University actively motivates our students to come into the SSS office to meet with their SSS Retention Specialist, SSS tutors and mentors, and attend SSS workshops as well as participating in University-based activities.
