The University of St. Thomas (UST) Rising Stars Internship Program is designed to serve disadvantaged students with the resources they need to succeed in their academic endeavors while gaining hands-on experience to prepare them for the workforce upon graduation. Students in the Rising Stars program are paired with a corporate sponsor and work as an intern during the academic year to earn funds toward tuition. The funds from the internship, combined with the Rising Stars scholarship, and federal and state educational grants, allow students to attend UST with a little out-of-pocket cost for tuition.Through the Rising Stars program, students are empowered to reach their academic and personal goals by staying enrolled in and graduating from UST, along with developing the skills needed to be successful in a corporate environment. The Rising Stars Internship Program supports its students’ success through customized programming, professional development training, mentorship opportunities, and educational experiences.

SOAR support first-time students to CTC in fall 2022, spring of 2023 and fall of 2023. Additionally, workshops and sponsored programming for faculty, staff and students will be continued from the Planning Grant, but the focus will be on relationship-building with students using an equity and success mindset. Specific components of SOAR include:
• Success mentoring to include direct aid for CTC students
• Success and equity programming and support for CTC students
• Campus Dialogues on equity, success and mentoring targeting students, faculty and staff
• Directed and intentional student communication and assessment regarding the CTC experience

SOAR builds on CTC’s Planning Grant whereby a workshop series on success, equity and engagement for faculty and staff was held in order to collect valuable feedback about initiatives being pursued and those that should be pursued. SOAR also builds on the work of the Student Success Advisory Team (SSAT) who studied first time at CTC cohorts in fall of 2019, 2020 and 2021 and determined that CTC loses the first-time population in the fall or immediately following the fall and that over half of the cohort are part-time, do not access a Pell, and do not complete the classes that they initially enroll in. Intentional support for these students and the issues that they face and continued training to the faculty and staff who serve them are required.

The Seahawk Closet addresses any needs that may exist among presently enrolled students. The Closet has a variety of resources ranging from school supplies to hygiene products, contributed by campus community members and employees. Students receive a variety of products at no cost. We hope that by giving students these resources, we can alleviate the strain of needing to seek financial assistance to acquire such items. Furthermore The Seahawk Closet helps students remove the stress of at-home and scholastic resource inadequacies, allowing them to succeed at Lamar State College-Port Arthur.

The Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) Career Talk Series initiative features events with guest speakers representing multiple fields of study within the Social and Behavioral Sciences department umbrella. The talks are not limited to students who take classes within the SBS Department, but rather are open to students throughout the college.

In this initiative, guest speakers share their past experiences as college students and discuss their journeys toward their current careers. During the presentations, students have the opportunity to engage with the guest speakers to ask questions and gain more insight into careers that may have previously been unknown to them.

The SBS Career Talk events have been implemented and supported by the entire SBS department, with each discipline providing guest speakers and instructors to help facilitate the events. The events are promoted by each discipline of the SBS Department as well as the college so that students taking classes outside of the SBS department are encouraged to attend the Career Talk events. Attending these events allows the students to earn participation credit they can use on their Alamo Experience transcripts.

Students enrolled in Career and Technical Education programs are required to complete training in soft skills. The college purchases access to a third-party software and instructors in each program area assign modules related to pre-employment skills, communication skills, self-management, and working with others. The completions of these modules are then reported to program advisory committees (employers) each year. Members of the advisor committees have an opportunity to provide input on the soft skills that are most critical at their workplace, and instructors respond accordingly by assigning the modules that address those skills.

The Somos Unidos “ One Word Project" is a student success initiative designed to accelerate mentor training and knowledge to support first-generation students and positively increase student retention and graduation rates. In partnership with the UIW FLIGHT Mentor Center, this project further expands UIWs ability to improve outcomes for first-generation students through curricular and co-curricular programming as well as professional development for faculty and staff. The intent is to create a sense of belonging for our students and methods to help students develop confidence and their own voices, ultimately strengthening retention rates amongst first-generation students. The Somos Unidos “ One Word Project seeks to raise the UIW retention rate to its institutional goal of 75% and close the gap each semester between these underserved populations and all other groups combined.

64% of respondents identified as first-generation.
19% of respondents usually tell their classmates they are first generation, while 27% only reveal in relevant situations
63% of respondents felt their was more academic support than expected before starting at the university
The most important services most helpful for first generation students were identified as celebration events, advising support, and financial aid support.
A low awareness of support services for first generation students indicates the need for opportunities for the institution to increase efforts to help first generation students know what supports are available.

Eligibility Requirements

Incoming, first-time college students with a 3.4 or higher GPA* who are from families with annual incomes of $50,000 or less may take advantage of this offer; OR
Incoming transfer students with a college GPA of 3.5 of higher who are from families with annual incomes of $50,000 or less may take advantage of this offer.

Eligible students must be a Texas resident and must file the FAFSA form and must be eligible for federal and state aid. UST’s FAFSA Code is 003654. This St. Thomas Promise of free tuition also includes free tutorial services plus a student success coach to help ensure a successful transition to college.

Starfish / Early Alert System allows university faculty, academic advisors, financial aid counselors, social work interns, professional counselors (mental health), dean of students, and the registrar to communicate with a student and share notes between departments in an effort to support the success and well-being of a student. Faculty are able to raise flags of academic or non-academic concern to alert of the possibility of failing a course or to request for additional support when they believe a students is facing financial difficulties, mental health issues, food insecurities, homelessness or other factors that may be negatively impacting the students academic success. Academic advisors are are able to see the early alerts and take action by setting up an appointment with the student to discuss their situation. The Starfish administrator is also able to direct any flags of non-academic concern to student support services and request assistance in addressing the students situation. Starfish / Early Alert System is primarily used to help with the retention of first time in college students but it is open to the general student body. Faculty are able to raise flags for undergraduate and graduate students.

Start Right is a program designed to communicate with students more effectively about the steps needing to be completed to prep for the next semester. Identified as Fall Prep Guide and Spring Prep Guide this program focuses on the responsibility of being a student by meeting the expectations the students have towards the university in preparing them to be successful. Student success starts first with an understanding of the logistics of being a student and the knowledge needed to be prepared for the start of the next semester. Start Right provides clear communication with students on the steps needing to be completed for the next semester, clearing accounts, registering for classes, registering for housing, and how these steps are connected. It follows a timeline that matches with the semester activities and provides opportunity to work with individual students as needed prior to a semester ending. The program provides an opportunity for the campus to serve the students in an intentional way making sure they are prepared for the next semester prior to a long break from campus. This program involves coordination across multiple departments on campus, advising, registrar's office, financial office, and residence life.

The Basic Needs Center is a campus support component within the Division of Student Affairs. In 2017, Paris Junior College was one of 30 colleges chosen nationwide by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) to lead the Guided Pathways initiative, which focuses on helping students clarify their goals, so that they can enter an educational pathway designed to help them achieve those goals and finish certificates or degrees with fewer excess hours and better preparation for employment or transfer to a four-year institution. Students choose a program within a pathway that aligns with their goals and interests. The Program Map specifies which courses the student should take and in what order, the marketable skills and outcomes and career opportunities associated with that program, and information regarding transfer to a four-year institution, where appropriate. PJC Program Maps are designed to help students stay on track with regard to their coursework and finish certificates or degrees with fewer excess hours. Academic advising is provided to all new and returning students by a Student Success Coach (Academic Advisor). Students are required to use college advising services when registering for their first semester of classes, and students who have not demonstrated college readiness are required to use advising services during each semester’s registration until such readiness has been achieved. Transfer students are also required to work with an advisor to register for their first semester. Students are assigned to a Student Success Coach at the beginning of their first term at PJC. Success Coaches assist students in the selection of appropriate educational programs, the selection of courses and the scheduling of courses. Success Coaches provide guidance and encouragement to ensure students stay on track towards graduation in their chosen academic pathway. In addition, Workforce faculty members assist with advising students in their educational areas.

This course is required of all FTIC freshmen. It includes material on college success, a service learning project, and requirements to attend academic, health-related, and social events on campus. It also includes a financial literacy component and a unit on budgeting.

For students who are TSI-incomplete in math or English/reading, there are special sections of this course that include content-specific remediation. Those special sections are linked to gateway math and English courses and take the place of traditional remedial/developmental education.

The TRIO Student Support Services program (SSS) at Sul Ross State University is a student retention program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that serves 160 students per year.

The mission of the Student Support Services program is to provide supportive educational services that will assist students with an academic need that are low income, first generation, or have a documented disability to acquire a university college degree.

The program offers academic advising, career/major counseling, personal support, classroom instruction, academic workshops, tutoring, financial aid counseling, new student extended orientation, graduate admission assistance, social/cultural activities, and much more.

The TRIO program at Sul Ross State University actively motivates our students to come into the SSS office to meet with their SSS Retention Specialist, SSS tutors and mentors, and attend SSS workshops as well as participating in University-based activities.

Under the direction of the Director of Student Retention, the goal of the Student Success Coaches is to build rapport with students through communication and trust. The Success Coaches use an early alert program called CRM Advise to identify students that are at risk, as they enter the College. The markers used are socioeconomic factors, test scores, EFC numbers, and FTIC status. Success Coaches are responsible for communicating with these students, to ensure that they are aware of services, on campus activities, and social clubs. Using the CRM Advise program, faculty members are also able to send alerts to the Success Coaches when there is a student that is exhibiting at risk behavior(s) in the classroom. The factors that are used would be missing class, assignments, not prepared, and poor performance on assignments. When a professor creates an at-risk alert in Advise, the Success Coach will contact the students through text, email, and phone calls. The Coaches will attempt to build a rapport with the student in an effort to figure out where they can help. In many cases, the student will be referred to on-campus resources, offered time management tips, study strategies, and test taking strategies. The Success Coaches also act as academic advisors to all students and a Financial Aid advisor to students. Finally, the Success Coaches are responsible for all New Student Orientations (NSO). These orientations are offered as a face-to-face option and an online option. The NSO is the first step to improving the first-year experience for the students. The Success Coaches give the students an understanding of what it will take to be successful, while also providing the new students with a clear picture of what is expected of them.

The Success Coaching Program is designed to help both undergraduate and graduate students develop their academic skills by matching their individual learning style and academic needs with effective strategies to meet their course requirements at UHCL. Students participating in this program have 2 options: requesting a one-time session to work on a particular skill, or meeting for multiple sessions on a weekly or as-needed basis. Students opting for a one-time session are assigned based on schedule and skills requested to an available coach. Students choosing to meet on a continual basis meet first with the Assistant Director to best determine individual academic needs and goals and then meet regularly with a Success Coach. The student's Success Coach coordinates a skill development plan with the student utilizing material from the student's current courses. Students are able to schedule their initial appointment by emailing or calling the office phone. After the student's initial appointment students can then schedule their own appointments at their convenience.

The skills that a Success Coach and students may develop include, but are not limited to, organization and time/task management, academic reading speed and strategy, note taking methods, test-taking strategy, critical thinking, and public speaking. The students' academic progress in these skills is monitored throughout the semester by their Success Coach. Success Coaches also offer students practical help with digital tools such as Blackboard and file sharing/editing in Google Drive for facilitating group work. Coaching sessions are available face-to-face or online via Blackboard Collaborate or Zoom as needed.

Supplemental Instruction offers students in gateway courses with high Drop/Fail/Withdraw rates an opportunity for individualized and small-group instruction led by a peer. SI leaders are students who have already taken the course and earned an A. As an SI, they attend the course like a regular student, where their job is to model excellent classroom behavior as a student, including effective note taking. They also serve as peer tutors, and they lead review and study sessions for students.

DELIVERY FORMAT: The program is in-person only.

The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program seeks to promote collaborative learning and critical thinking amongst students through group discussion and evaluation of higher-level ideas and concepts. The emphasis of SI is to facilitate students' understanding of the course's most difficult content. In addition to SI's short-term goal of helping students succeed in any one course, the program's long-term goals are: (1) to model effective study skills to students, and (2) to empower them with the independent learning skills needed to break the cycle of learning dependency. SI aims to challenge students to become active “rather than passive“ learners, and by empowering them with the skills and confidence to develop independent learning techniques. The role of the SI Leader is not to teach or re-lecture to the students from a position of authority, but rather to facilitate peer-to-peer interaction amongst students during study group sessions. St. Edward's provides free in person & virtual SI sessions for some of the most challenging courses in the Munday School of Business, the School of Natural Sciences, and the School of Behavioral & Social Sciences. SI sessions are led by student leaders who did well in the course and are recommended by faculty. Student leaders earn invaluable advanced experiential learning opportunities, as they collaborate closely with faculty, design lesson plans for session, receive structured training, and engage students through a collaborative learning process. Additionally, here at St. Edward's University, data shows that students who regularly participate in SI earn higher grades than students who do not participate.

The Service-Learning Faculty Fellowship program provides an intentional professional development opportunity for faculty members interested in service-learning. The practical and theoretical underpinnings of service-learning are emphasized through three workshops during the fall. Faculty members then apply these principles by teaching a service-learning course of their design in the spring semester. Three spring discussions provide structured support for troubleshooting challenges and ensuring quality. Benefits include a stipend, a course release (when possible), recognition by university leadership, and evidence of teaching excellence to support promotion and tenure applications.
