The I’m First – UT Tyler program is a program that services the needs of first-generation college students on main campus as well as satellite campuses and those undertaking online coursework. This program understands that each first-generation college student experience is different from the next (and many of those experiences are based in intersectional identities), so our program is centered on information sharing, advocacy, and connections to UT Tyler students, faculty, and resources. We strive to provide a sense of belonging within our campus community, which is key to not only retention and completion but the success of each student’s journey with us. As such, one of our primary methods is advocacy on campus through open and accessible communication channels – we are the touchpoint for all first-gen student questions about anything UT Tyler or college related and direct them or take them to the appropriate office to aid them.

Every month we send out a checklist newsletter to all first-generation college students (including international students and non-degree seeking students) that highlights upcoming university deadlines, breaks, campus community events (like blood drives, game and movie nights, holiday celebrations, etc), and links to all resources like tutoring and supplemental instruction. In addition to the checklist, we have created a regularly-updated glossary of all university terms (with links to the appropriate contacts and webpages) that is posted on our website and circulated accordingly.

We also host our own events, such as scholarship application workshops in which students may come to learn how to find the best scholarships for their situations and demographics, how to write the best essay, and how to submit them. This is an all-day, 2-day service offered in-person, but online and distance students are free to make unlimited one-on-one appointments for the same purpose as well as for resume review. We also host come-and-go social events. Further, we honor these students by providing first-generation stoles at every graduation and present them at a free banquet for them and their families. They are also available for pickup at graduation check-in. We host tables at preview days and homeschool days with swag and information, and our newly formed student organization will have a presence at orientation as well as host their own peer-centered events.

Lastly, beginning in the 2022 fall semester, the first-generation living-learning community will open its first wing in an on-campus housing unit. It will have its own first-generation RA as well as weekly meetings with our office’s staff that serve to bring the university’s resources to the students directly, such as advising, tutoring, safe zone training, study halls, library liaison tutorials, and more. Further, these students will also participate in servant-leadership opportunities and get to experience the Tyler community on field trips.

LEADS: Learn, Experience, Achieve Defined Success

The LEADS Program: Learn, Experience, Achieve Defined Success, is a multi-faceted first year experience (FYE) program that is designed to create a foundation and culture of learning and engagement for students at Howard College. The program is implemented through the fall and spring semesters of each academic year. The program focuses on 1) acquisition and enhancement of academic skills, 2) career exploration and plan development, and 3) peer, campus, and community engagement. LEADS incorporates a mandatory zero week orientation as well as a student success course which meets graduation requirements for the college. Career clusters are created in alliance with the college's Pathways for Success model and have no more than 15 students in each group. Students participate in career clusters with their peers with similar career interests.

The program is designed as a holistic first year experience that will engage students in their college campus, their communities, and their academic experiences. It fosters student commitment to learning and to actively participating in their academic and career planning so that their experiences have meaning and purpose as they move through the educational journey. Each student will work both individually as well as in group settings in all segments of the program.

The Lions Den Classroom is a retention-focused initiative to engage the Deans of the college with more impactful interactions with students majoring in the College of Education and Human Services. It is our belief that students want to have more of a connection with the Deans and want to know who they are. As the Deans visit classrooms with goodies throughout the academic year, it allows students to ask questions, understand the college on a deeper level, and provides them with the opportunity to get a firsthand view of the Deans. Lions Den Classroom most importantly provides students the chance to discover information they would not be able to find anywhere else.

The Male Alliance for a Rigorous, Transformative, and Interdisciplinary Approach to Learning (MARTIAL) is a Living Learning Community designed to improve the academic outcomes for African American men at UNT. Up to 20 incoming freshmen, known as MARTIAL Eagles, are invited to live together in Rawlins Hall while learning and leading together throughout their first year and beyond. This is primarily a first-year program during which participants enroll in a 3-hour first year seminar taught by program staff, prepare for classes during weekly group study sessions, and engage one another in a variety of community-building activities. Program staff work with students individually and in small groups, building relationships that foster trust so that they may walk alongside participants as they reach new milestones and work through inevitable challenges. Generally, the program aims to help students become familiar with campus, build a solid community of like-minded peers, and to reach their academic goal of graduating with a bachelor’s degree.

MSI is a jam-packed five-week program held during the month of July exclusively for incoming freshmen students at the University of St. Thomas. The Institute helps our newest Celts prepare for the rigors of UST. When not in class, students build meaningful friendships with fellow incoming freshmen as well as with established Mendenhall Mentors by going on excursions around Houston and activities beyond the classroom.

By the end of July, students will have completed 6 elective credit hours, will have received a head start applying to on-campus jobs, and will be more confident in their abilities to thrive at UST.

Ms. Mendenhall, who founded MSI 15 years ago, gives 30 students in the Institute a $1,000 per semester for up to 8 semesters scholarship. These scholarships are distributed based on need and participation in the program.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: We have found that students who participate in Mendenhall retain at a significantly higher rate than their peers. Our Mendenhallers retain at about a 94% rate and go on to graduate higher than their peers as well. Additionally, our students assume leadership roles more regularly than their peers because of their level of comfort with the institution.

Nest Builders is a micro-award program designed to drive social-academic engagement and retention outcomes for first-time-in-college students using existing data and predictive analytics to build unique pathways via tagging. Pathways incentivize programs, services, and essential activities such as completing the FAFSA, registering early, and engaging in co-curricular opportunities correlated with higher enrollment rates. Owl Access seeks to improve the transition experience of first-generation college students and their families. Our goal is to support first-generation college students by building a network of community members and to encourage the positive self-identification of those who are the first in their families to attend college and/or students from low-income communities. Owl Access will be a 2.5-day college transition program that focuses on providing first-generation and/or low-income new students a head start on college adjustment. Throughout Owl Access, students will connect with faculty, staff, and peer leaders to help them understand how to navigate Rice, and their college experience, including topics such as academics, financial aid, social engagement, health and wellbeing, and other on-campus opportunities. Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL)

Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) allows student to work in small groups of 8 facilitated by peers who have successfully passed the course. Students in PLTL work on practice problem sets developed by UTA faculty. PLTL sessions are facilitated once a week and attendance is mandatory. After a weekly meeting with faculty, PLTL Leaders will meet with the group throughout the entire semester to help with conceptual content and study skills.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: The PLTL model was successful in decreasing the DFW rate in PLTL supported courses in 21-22. PLTL decreased DFW rates between 4% to 40% across courses. Supported courses are MATH 1426 (Calculus I), MATH 2425 (Calculus II), MATH 2326 (Calculus III), CHEM 1441 (General Chemistry I), CHEM 1442 (General Chemistry II) and CHEM 1465 (Chemistry for Engineers).

Peer Mentors have successfully completed the Learning Frameworks course and now work closely with the First-Year Seminar instructor to provide peer mentoring and instructional support to one section of the Learning Frameworks's first-year and transfer students. Coordinating with an assigned Learning Frameworks faculty member to prepare for each weekly lesson, peer mentors serve as liaisons between students and faculty. Peer mentors are also clearinghouses for student success resources and campus events. They exemplify critical thinking by modeling class assignments, assessing weekly writing assignments, and facilitating small group discussions. During weekly peer mentor-student conversations about academic success tips, co-curricular opportunities, and targeted workshops, they create an atmosphere of trust, responsibility, and encouragement with students.

The First-Year Seminar Peer Mentor Program also benefits peer mentor cohorts. Peer mentors develop leadership skills vital to college and professional success; receive mentorship from faculty supervisors; create a close community within their cohort through shared trainings and experiences; cultivate fairness by engaging in challenging assumptions about cross- and intra-cultural diversity; and participate in professional development opportunities such as presenting at academic conferences, moderating First-Year Seminar events, and networking with campus and community leaders.

The Priddy Foundation Scholars Program provides scholarships for first generation students, in addition to supporting students throughout their four years of education at Midwestern State University. Opportunities for "The Priddy Scholars" include student success workshops, career planning assistance and study abroad. Program activities include the following:

First year: Reside in a first-year residence hall. Participate in a first-year learning community. Participate in weekly meetings covering topics such as time management, money management, working with up to date technology, and study skills. Complete an interest inventory and work with the professional staff in the Career Management Center to select a major.

Sophomore year: Reside in a scholar community in Legacy Hall. Select and complete a community service project as a group. Work with the Career Management Center on career options.

Junior and senior years: Participate in study abroad. Participate in undergraduate research or a creative arts endeavor. Participate in an internship. Work with the Career Management Center on resume building, post-graduation transitions.

The Primary Care Pathway Program (PCPP) is a partnership between the University of North Texas Health Science Center, University of North Texas, Midland College and Midland Memorial Hospital. The program seeks to provide physicians in the Midland-Odessa and West Texas region by offering an accelerated pathway from a community college to an osteopathic medical school. Students complete their first two years at Midland College, the third year at the University of North Texas, and the final four years at the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to the accelerated curriculum, the program provides advisement and experiences to prepare students for the rigors of medical school. Ultimately, the program aims to recruit students who wish to practice in the Midland area.

We created two writing instruction (WI) courses for each discipline where specific aspects of writing within that discipline were taught, practiced, and refined. We encouraged programs to have one WI course early in the curriculum and one later in the curriculum. We worked to align the University Writing Center and Library with these efforts. We offered grants, stipends, and learning experiences for faculty engaged in these efforts.

The Rice Emerging Scholars Program (RESP) is an innovative, residential academic program designed to help first-year students prepare for the challenging pace, depth, and rigor of the STEM curricula at Rice. Unique among programs of its kind at highly selective institutions, RESP's approach to college transition and success is comprehensive, combining a rigorous six-week academic summer bridge program with personalized and holistic mentoring and support for the duration of the college experience.

RESP's mission is to ensure that students of high potential who attended under-resourced high schools, particularly low-income and first-generation students, persist, thrive, and graduate at the same rate as their peers, and that these students achieve their academic and professional aspirations as scientists and engineers.

RESP is designed to ensure that students who would most benefit from the program are not excluded due to cost. Accordingly, RESP Scholars attend the summer program at no cost and receive a stipend for their participation. They also enjoy a personalized array of mentoring and support services throughout their time at Rice.

In fulfilling its charge to help these students meet all the challenges they face, RESP comprehensively addresses their particular academic and navigational needs together with other challenges unique to students from underserved communities. And RESP stands with them from before they matriculate until after they graduate -- this is what it means to provide an environment in which students may "thrive."

The STARS Plan program was designed to support students who are struggling academically. Our target population of students are those who are between the GPA of 2.00-2.49. At any given time, these students could fall below a 2.00 GPA, leading to suspension both academically and of financial aid. Dropping below this threshold could also present a challenge for students who are planning to transfer and/or those seeking programs that require above a 2.5 GPA to be admitted. The STARS Plan serves as a supportive system to ensure retention and persistence. Tutoring, resources, academic planning and staff support are all part of the process. Currently, student are not automatically enrolled in this program, but are are invited by their advisors to create a plan once they surpass the aforementioned threshold.

APPROXIMATE PARTICIPANTS SERVED IN 2021-22: 0

HOW TO ENROLL: All stakeholders have access to this program. As such, there is no enrollment process

EVALUATION STATUS: Data related to program outcomes are currently being internally collected

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: A combined total of 350 students were contacted Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. Of these students, 22 students agreed to participate in our STARS Plan Initiative. Results show 59% (13 out of 22 students) achieved a GPA above a 2.49 and 68% (15 out of 22 students) increased their GPA.

The Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) Career Talk Series initiative features events with guest speakers representing multiple fields of study within the Social and Behavioral Sciences department umbrella. The talks are not limited to students who take classes within the SBS Department, but rather are open to students throughout the college.

In this initiative, guest speakers share their past experiences as college students and discuss their journeys toward their current careers. During the presentations, students have the opportunity to engage with the guest speakers to ask questions and gain more insight into careers that may have previously been unknown to them.

The SBS Career Talk events have been implemented and supported by the entire SBS department, with each discipline providing guest speakers and instructors to help facilitate the events. The events are promoted by each discipline of the SBS Department as well as the college so that students taking classes outside of the SBS department are encouraged to attend the Career Talk events. Attending these events allows the students to earn participation credit they can use on their Alamo Experience transcripts.

Student Development and Mentoring (SDM)

Student Development and Mentoring (SDM) provides peer mentoring, academic coaching, and developmental education programs for first-time in college (FTIC) students, students who are not college ready based on TSI Scores, and students identified as being at-risk by faculty or academic performance metrics. Academic Coaching provides support for students in extreme academic distress while peer mentoring provides opportunities for all FTIC students to engage with sophomore, junior, and senior mentors who connect them to campus resources and help with social and academic transition to the university.
