TVCC faculty bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the TVCC student body. Advancing opportunities for mentorships and students to demonstrate their learned skills by networking with their community is a critical aspect to encourage student engagement during classroom instruction. The Learning Symposium offers opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills to create projects meaningful to them and the community they care about. The concept of the learning symposium is new at TVCC, but resembles the concept of a student research symposium at 4-year universities. The goals for creating an annual symposium are to:
• Provide a structure for faculty – student mentorships in specific content areas which students are passionate and interested in.
• Inspire cross-circular learning experiences.
• Provide a focus on academic achievement for TVCC students.
• Increase community involvement with TVCC students.
• Foster deeper connections between Terrell, Kaufman, Athens, Palestine, and dual credit students. (The symposium would be hosted by rotating TVCC campuses in Athens, Terrell, and Palestine yearly, with dual credit and embedded faculty encouraged to participate.)
• Gain regional recognition from other colleges within the second and third years by offering invitations for their students to join.

Students and faculty are encouraged to think of ways they can connect classroom instruction to service opportunities in their communities and demonstrate skills they have developed. This is known as Applied Learning Opportunities.
We are striving to recognize the knowledge students bring to the learning environment and connect with communities and seek real-life experiences. By encouraging students to participate in the Learning Symposium, we are asking students to apply what they are learning to a whole task in a form that is relevant and appropriate to their goals and skills. Areas in which to frame a project include, but are not limited to: Service Learning/Community Service, Research/Field Study, Arts, Leadership, Civil Engagement, and Internships.

The Lions Den Classroom is a retention-focused initiative to engage the Deans of the college with more impactful interactions with students majoring in the College of Education and Human Services. It is our belief that students want to have more of a connection with the Deans and want to know who they are. As the Deans visit classrooms with goodies throughout the academic year, it allows students to ask questions, understand the college on a deeper level, and provides them with the opportunity to get a firsthand view of the Deans. Lions Den Classroom most importantly provides students the chance to discover information they would not be able to find anywhere else.

At LSC-Houston North, we put students first. Each first-time college student enrolled in EDUC 1300 Learning Frameworks course receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first semester. Upon completing EDUC 1300, students can opt in to an America Mentor program and be assigned a faculty or staff mentor. Our mentors are devoted to guiding our students and steering them in the right direction.

Initially funded by a Title V grant for Hispanic-Serving Institutions from the US Department of Education, CASA is Connecting students to the campus community, Acclimating them to the rigors of academic life, helping them Succeed academically, and preparing them to Achieve and compete in college and beyond. The program guides students through the four CASA phases through three initiatives. Information Technology Enhanced Multidisciplinary Academic Learning Lounges (iMALLS) and the Center for Academic Advising and Transition (CAST) are designed to connect students to resources and opportunities to improve academic preparedness while Meaningfully Aligned Targeted Curriculum for Hispanic Students (MATCH) ensures students are receiving best-fit instruction based on proven methods. These three initiatives encompass twelve activities to engage students in research-based programs that facilitate in students a sense of belonging, influence, competence and efficacy. MATCH activities have assisted in increasing the number of students graduating with a degree or certificate within three years from a baseline of 14% to 26%. Hispanic completion was 25%. CAST tutoring and advising activities assisted in increasing the three-year transfer rate of students from a baseline of 6% to 12%. Hispanic transfer was 11%. iMALL activities have assisted in increasing the fall-to-fall persistence of FTIC fulltime students by 7% over the 2014 baseline of 50%. Hispanic student persistence was 61%.

The Global GRIT Experience (GGE) has a mission to infuse the principles of grit mindset and behaviors into local and global communities. As a diverse campus, Lone Star College-Tomball seeks to be recognized as a leader in utilizing grit mindset to develop human potential. Some of the goals related to GGE are: make a difference in shifting negative experiences to positives experiences for students, create a Grit focused community that centers on redefining student abilities, support student success beyond college completion, make connection between policies and procedures and student needs in order to inform better practices, work with community partners to promote Grit within our students both on and off campus, create Grit mindset awareness and be a resource for other higher education institutions, increase student persistence, retention, and completion by 2% each academic year, and develop a Grit certification program for the LSC-Tomball community. SFA has identified student wellness and well-being as a critical basic need. To champion this, SFA established the Lumberjack Wellness Network. Founded upon the principles of the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, the Lumberjack Wellness Network was developed to educate the SFA community on student well-being. We empower faculty and staff to have meaningful and helpful conversations with students in need. We equip the community with tools, resources, and appropriate recommendations and referrals, connecting students to the help they need.

We will take the Network and the dimensions of wellness to the next level, with cutting-edge technology, ensuring our staff our current on all best practices and trends within mental health, and rethinking our current physical space to better meet our students' needs. This revision includes the upgrade of our current food pantry operations to include a refrigerator and freezer to allow us to begin offering fresh produce and frozen meats. It also includes breathing life to a currently unutilized green space to offer our campus community a space to relax, refocus, and re-center. It also focuses on the needs of our student-athletes to help them retain, progress, and graduate. This application includes collaboration from across campus, including the Dean of Students Office, Athletics, the Health and Wellness Hub, and Campus Recreation.

These initiatives will help to solidify and advance the Lumberjack Wellness Network. These initiatives will help us meet the needs of our students and help us continue to transition to a place or prevention and pre-intervention rather than reaction.

The Male Alliance for a Rigorous, Transformative, and Interdisciplinary Approach to Learning (MARTIAL) is a Living Learning Community designed to improve the academic outcomes for African American men at UNT. Up to 20 incoming freshmen, known as MARTIAL Eagles, are invited to live together in Rawlins Hall while learning and leading together throughout their first year and beyond. This is primarily a first-year program during which participants enroll in a 3-hour first year seminar taught by program staff, prepare for classes during weekly group study sessions, and engage one another in a variety of community-building activities. Program staff work with students individually and in small groups, building relationships that foster trust so that they may walk alongside participants as they reach new milestones and work through inevitable challenges. Generally, the program aims to help students become familiar with campus, build a solid community of like-minded peers, and to reach their academic goal of graduating with a bachelor’s degree.

The Math Center ("Math Lab") is an in-person, drop-in math tutoring center located in room 110 in the Math and Science Building (MS). Men of Distinction at Lone Star College-Montgomery is a student success program that creates opportunities for male students at Lone Star College from underrepresented backgrounds and marginalized communities to get connected to academic success resources, student engagement programs, guided degree planning support and professional mentors. The overall goal of the program is to establish academic cohorts that allow for opportunities to increase persistence and retention for students, foster a sense of belonging, as well as develop the necessary skills for career readiness and university transfer pathways.

MSI is a jam-packed five-week program held during the month of July exclusively for incoming freshmen students at the University of St. Thomas. The Institute helps our newest Celts prepare for the rigors of UST. When not in class, students build meaningful friendships with fellow incoming freshmen as well as with established Mendenhall Mentors by going on excursions around Houston and activities beyond the classroom.

By the end of July, students will have completed 6 elective credit hours, will have received a head start applying to on-campus jobs, and will be more confident in their abilities to thrive at UST.

Ms. Mendenhall, who founded MSI 15 years ago, gives 30 students in the Institute a $1,000 per semester for up to 8 semesters scholarship. These scholarships are distributed based on need and participation in the program.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: We have found that students who participate in Mendenhall retain at a significantly higher rate than their peers. Our Mendenhallers retain at about a 94% rate and go on to graduate higher than their peers as well. Additionally, our students assume leadership roles more regularly than their peers because of their level of comfort with the institution.
