Here we have a motorized cart that moves with constant velocity on top of a large piece of paper.  The velocity of the cart with respect to the surface is the same in all three experiments.  In the first experiment, the piece of paper is at rest with respect to the table. For our second experiment, we set the cart in motion but pull the paper in the opposite direction with roughly the same speed as the speed of the cart with respect to the paper. In this case, the cart velocity with respect to the table is essentially zero. In the third experiment, we pull the paper in the same direction as the velocity of the cart with respect to the paper. In this case, the cart is moving with a larger velocity with respect to the table.
