Students on academic probation or academic suspension are provided zero-hour, course-based support for academic recovery. Course curriculum and activities align with activities that lead to academic success in the students' other courses. Students meet with an academic recovery coach, receive coordinated care from other offices such as counseling services, engage with tutors for coursework, and more. All support is available both in-person and virtually. UNIV 2001, for students on academic probation, and UNIV 3001, for students on academic suspension, are designed for students to regain good academic standing, thereby increasing credit accumulation, increasing GPA, and decreasing time to completion.

The Academic Success Center's embedded tutoring program provides equitable access to academic support by aligning support between the instructor, the tutor, and the course content. Embedded tutors provide support to students enrolled in gateway courses such as MATH 1314 College Algebra, CHEM 1411 General Chemistry I, MATH 1420 Calculus, and more. The Academic Success Center identifies potential equity gaps in end-of-course outcomes and provides scaffolded and aligned academic support using in- and out-of-class tutoring. Tutors provide in-class support during classroom practice and activities, particularly in active learning classrooms. Tutors provide out-of-class support in study groups, one-on-one tutoring sessions, and review sessions. Tutoring services are located in a centralized tutoring and mentoring center inside the campus library to provide access to connect students to different support services. All tutoring is also available online.

Bring Bobcats Back is a formal outreach to undergraduate stop-outs at Texas State University who have not completed their bachelor's degree. The program started in 2018 by targeting 350 seniors close to graduation but not enrolled in the past year. Due to early success, the university expanded the program in June 2020. The goal was to contact all undergraduate students who stopped out between 1990 and 2018. The list was checked through the National Student Clearinghouse database for degree completion at other institutions. The university developed an external partnership with ReUp Education to scale the operation. We did outreach to over 25,000 students who had attended in the past 28 years. Since 2020, we have enrolled 438 students, currently engaging 2,252 about returning, and 119 have graduated. We have 37 that have applied for May 2022 graduation. We have 256 students enrolled this spring. The persistence rate from fall to spring was 83%. The university applied for and received a three million reskilling grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to help remove financial barriers. This grant has allowed us to expand the reach to stop-outs, displaced workers, or those who want to reskill. Each semester, after census day, we add any new names for outreach. The feedback data from stop-outs is helping us to be more proactive with retention practices. The six-year graduation rate jumped by 2.8% since 2019. (2013 cohort 54%, 2014 Cohort 55%, and 2015 cohort 56.8%). We expect hundreds more students will enroll and graduate in the coming years from the Bring Bobcats Back initiative.

Cardinal Communities (CC) is a mentoring program that provides a supportive community in which students engage in meaningful relationships with fellow students, faculty, and staff that empower them to develop a sense of community and belonging and gain information to successfully transition to Lamar University. CC serves first time in college students who participate in one-hour weekly non credit-bearing interest or major-based sessions that are led by Peer and Professional Mentors, which are supplemented with individual peer mentoring sessions and social events throughout their first semester.

SHSU is a partner of Navigate EAB and utilizes this technology as our primary student success management system. The Coordinated Care Network is a function of Navigate EAB and has been employed at SHSU as a retention-based partnership across several divisions. The Coordinated Care Network supports student success by bridging institutional efforts in receiving and triaging student alerts and referrals through Campus Connect (Navigate EAB). When faculty or staff issue an alert or referral, Campus Connect is configured to enact a chain of technology driven events to connect the student with the expert department who then provides appropriate intervention. Additionally, we target high-needs students to submit an alert or referral on themselves to receive assistance with their particular need(s). Overall, students who are alerted through the Coordinated Care Network and/or self-alert process experience positive gains in credit completion, term GPA outcomes, and persistence rates.

Course Transformation for High DFW Courses Project

In the Course Transformation Project, a team of faculty who teach courses with traditionally high D/F/W rates work together to explore ways to improve student learning and performance in the course by incorporating student-centered, evidence-based design and teaching practices as well as disseminating and replicating best practices already in use by individual instructors. The director of the Office of Faculty Development serves as project facilitator. The project includes examining granular, disaggregated course data to identify design and pedagogical strengths and gaps. These data are used by the team to identify research-based design and pedagogical practices that address gaps and enhance strengths. The team integrates these identified practices into the course as disciplinary-appropriate interventions in a pilot phase of the project. In addition, the team designs and implements methods of assessing efficacy of the interventions during the pilot. The team meets weekly during the design stage of the project and monthly during the implementation stage to discuss findings and make any necessary adjustments.

ELITE (Establishing Leadership In & Through Education) is a minority male program established in 2010 to help increase minority retention and graduation rates. The purpose of the SH ELITE program is to enable Black & Hispanic males to transcend the status quo in minority male academic, professional and personal success. EAGLE is a mentoring program that pairs new teachers/adjuncts and facilitators from partnering school districts (ISDs) with seasoned LIT faculty to immerse them in LIT’s culture and receive any needed support.

Throughout the semester, the mentor will meet with mentee in person and/or online to review processes, policies, procedures, the learning management system (LMS), and the early alert system. The mentor will also generally be available to provide support and assistance, serving as the mentee’s point of contact for immediate assistance and providing instructional support as needed.

The First-Gen Advisory Board collaborates to support first-gen students with programing and mentoring. The board members also provide feedback on first-gen initiatives. All colleges are represented by an advisory board member. The majority of advisory board members are first-gen.

During its first year in existence, the board provided first-gen students with the following:
- All colleges hosted a celebration during National First-Gen Week for its first-gen students that enabled students, faculty, and staff to engage in events that created a culture of awareness and understanding of the first-gen college student experience.
- Planned and executed the inaugural First-Gen to Grad School event. Board members supported with a first-gen panel and round-table events led by first-gen staff and faculty.

Sam Houston State University (SHSU) established its First-Generation Center (FGC) on June 6, 2022, as 53% of its students are first-generation students. An SHSU student is considered first-generation if neither parent nor guardian earned a bachelor’s degree in the United States. The SHSU FGC is dedicated to helping first-generation students and their families navigate their university experience.

The FGC operates on the following PRIORITIES, nested under the SHSU priorities of its strategic plan:
- Connect and engage the first-gen population to university resources and services.
- Enhance an inclusive environment that promotes a sense of belonging and empowers first-gen students to succeed (Proud to be First-Generation).
- Advance a culture of engagement and perseverance through first-gen programming.
- Known for its commitment to first-gen student success in the State of Texas.
- Identify, develop, and strengthen relationships with first-gen alumni, community group/organizations and other entities with a large first-gen focus to support first-gen students.

First-Generation students gain a community, have a transformative experience, and complete a bachelor’s degree.

Recognizing the importance of STEM education in preparing the increasingly diverse generations that will make up the American workforce, this project strives to generate STEM student success at Texas State University (TXST) for Hispanic and Low Income (HLI) students who will become our next scientific and technical professionals. There are four primary activities designed to address persistent challenges in STEM education and career attainment for HLI students. Activity 1 will create a Peer Education Program with Success Coaches that will serve all incoming HLI freshman and transfer students in their first year at TXST who are identified through a predictive analytics factor-specific model as needing high-support during their transition to college. Activity 2 will improve the transfer navigation process and increase transfer matriculation to TXST through creation of a Transfer Articulation and Navigation Center. Center staff will initiate new transfer articulation agreements with 2-year HSIs, produce an online repository of course equivalency guides and other information pertinent for transfer students, and provide direct student transfer advising to facilitate the transfer process. Activity 3 will create a STEM Workforce Advisory Council to build collaborations with STEM employers leading to expanded Co-Op and work-based experiences for HLI STEM students; additionally, a new Work-based Experience Preparatory program will be implemented to provide targeted students with professional development improving their competitiveness for employment upon graduation. Activity 4 will provide professional development in culturally responsive teaching methods for STEM faculty teaching core courses that will enable faculty to make lasting changes to their instructional methods to improve HLI students' success.

Faculty are often the first people who know that students are having problems in (or out) of your classes that may affect their success or retention. Faculty and staff are asked to report students who are having academic, personal, financial or other concerns (excessive absences, disability services, homelessness) using an online form. The retention team will begin contacting these students within 24 or 48 hours of completing the report. The team includes Academic Advising, Disability Services, Dual Credit and Title V representatives.

Mindfulness, Stress Reduction and Emotional Intelligence Initiative

This initiative aims to harness the effectiveness of evidence-informed interventions to target mood-related concerns. The goal is to provide campus-wide, multi-modal instruction and engagement in mindfulness, stress reduction, emotional intelligence, and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. This initiative consists of interactive video-based instruction, live workshops, curated on-demand campus reflection/relaxation spaces, self-help resources (individual and utilization in academic classes), campus focused MHFA, and an invited expert speaker or panel event. The expanded dissemination of prevention-focused skills training will serve as a buffer against more severe psychological distress and behavioral concerns, allow students to more fully engage in their academic pursuits/interpersonal relationships, as well as assist the participants in better identifying options to assist those experiencing psychological or emotional distress. During this one-day event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., students meet with faculty, staff, and other students. Students are able to explore the degrees and certificates LSCPA offers and find their pathway to success.

Students have an opportunity to tour on-campus apartments, take a campus tour, and learn more about the college. During the day, students will also be able to speak with Admissions, Financial Aid, and Enrollment Services teams.

Peer Mentors are here to help first-year students academically and socially transition to Texas State University during their first year. Peer Mentors are upperclassmen embedded in a first-year seminar course and meet with students twice a semester or more to facilitate a successful first year transition. Peer Mentors are certified through the College Reading and Learning Association International Peer Educator Training Program. Goals and objectives for the program include: maximize student academic and personal success, create a supportive environment, connect first-year students to campus resources, assist in fostering a student's sense of belonging to increase first-year retention rates.
