Biology is designed for multi-semester biology courses for science majors. It is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand. While many study skills, composition and reading skills texts separate these activities into discrete skills to be learned separately, this books recognizes that these skills are interconnected. A student who struggles with the reading will have a hard time writing about it or discussing it. A student who has inadequate strategies for listening to lectures will struggle to see the connections between the lecture and the reading. Therefore, this book moves away from the “skills and drills” texts that are so common in reading and writing textbooks. Instead, this book features process and provides opportunities for students (and instructors) to think about the best ways to approach academic tasks. For example, a “skills and drills” oriented book might teach students how to take Cornell Notes and use graphic organizers, but it does not provide any information for students that would allow them to decide when it would be best to choose one note taking method over the other. This book’s main focus is helping students develop that sort of judgement.

Exploring American Government is a workbook aimed at improving student and faculty experiences with open educational resources (OER) designed for undergraduate American government courses. The first pages of Exploring American Government begin by motivating and orienting students to learn about politics. Instructors will recognize the familiar layout of the following chapters. We begin by encouraging students to assess their existing knowledge of the subject and evaluate contemporary problems of civic engagement and challenges for the digital age. The following chapters seek to prepare students for informed participation, exploring topics such as constitutional development, federalism, civil liberties and civil rights, participation, public opinion, media, and institutions. Topic by topic, the assignments in the workbook help students discover new sources of information, retain knowledge about how the government works, and practice their critical thinking skills.

In 1667, John Milton published what he intended both as the crowning achievement of a poetic career and a justification of God's ways to man: an epic poem which retold and reimagined the Biblical story of creation, temptation, and original sin. Even in a hostile political climate, Paradise Lost was almost immediately recognized as a classic, and one fate of a classic is to be rewritten, both by admirers and by antagonists. In this seminar, we will read Paradise Lost alongside works of 20th century fantasy and science fiction which rethink both Milton's text and its source.

Subject allows students with a strong interest in independent research to fulfill the project laboratory requirement for the Biology Department Program in the context of a research laboratory at MIT.
