The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) motto is, "Building Leaders Who make a Better World." The program’s purpose is to build leaders, support people in achieving their goals, and improve the world in the process. NSLS is a national honor society that give students the tools they need to drive their future forward, establish themselves as leaders among their peers, and build real-world skills that will help them excel in the workplace. Students are selected to participate in the Western Texas College (WTC) chapter of this program based on exemplary academic achievement and are inducted after completing a 12 hour process over the course of a semester. Participants have access to offerings such as scholarships, an exclusive job board, skill-building, networking opportunities, and coaching.

New Student Orientation is a program designed to help incoming students make the transition to college life. During this one-day event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., students meet with faculty, staff, and other students. Students are able to explore the degrees and certificates LSCPA offers and find their pathway to success.

Students have an opportunity to tour on-campus apartments, take a campus tour, and learn more about the college. During the day, students will also be able to speak with Admissions, Financial Aid, and Enrollment Services teams.

The Nighthawks Nest Student Advocacy Center is a virtual and physical space that offers access to basic needs that may affect students mental and physical health and can compromise their wellbeing overall, resulting in poor academic performance, retention and or completion. All students at ETBU are assigned an academic advisor in their field of study. Students must meet with this faculty member in order to register for classes each semester - students do not register for classes on their own. This process helps our advisors work with students to ensure all degree requirements are met as well as help them plan for future semesters. The one-on-one approach also allows our advisors to keep a direct line of communication with students, helping them navigate not only their degree requirements but also their academic career, including discussions on changing majors or adding/dropping classes within a semester.

Opportunity Tuition Waiver

The Opportunity Tuition Waiver covers the cost of tuition and general fees at Western Texas College for high school graduates from Scurry County schools. High School graduates must be registered in at least twelve (12) credit hours for the fall semester immediately following his/her graduation and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75. To qualify for the waiver, graduates must complete the OTW application, contract, and 40 hours of volunteer service at approved volunteer sites in Scurry County communities. To continue receiving the waiver, students must maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher and complete another 40 hours of service to the community. The waiver only covers the cost of credits earning students a certificate or degree. The Opportunity Tuition Waiver covers tuition and certain fees (building and general use fees only) for a maximum of fifteen (15) credit hours per semester for Scurry County high school graduates and twelve (12) credit hours per semester for Scurry County Dual Credit students.

Owl Access seeks to improve the transition experience of first-generation college students and their families. Our goal is to support first-generation college students by building a network of community members and to encourage the positive self-identification of those who are the first in their families to attend college and/or students from low-income communities. Owl Access will be a 2.5-day college transition program that focuses on providing first-generation and/or low-income new students a head start on college adjustment. Throughout Owl Access, students will connect with faculty, staff, and peer leaders to help them understand how to navigate Rice, and their college experience, including topics such as academics, financial aid, social engagement, health and wellbeing, and other on-campus opportunities. Owl Access will also introduce families to our campus resources and provide families with the information and tools they need to support their student’s success at Rice. As food insecurity becomes a growing concern for college campuses, Rice is proud to join the efforts of campus food pantries nationwide. Peer Mentoring (First Year Seminar courses)

Peer Mentors have successfully completed the Learning Frameworks course and now work closely with the First-Year Seminar instructor to provide peer mentoring and instructional support to one section of the Learning Frameworks's first-year and transfer students. Coordinating with an assigned Learning Frameworks faculty member to prepare for each weekly lesson, peer mentors serve as liaisons between students and faculty. Peer mentors are also clearinghouses for student success resources and campus events. They exemplify critical thinking by modeling class assignments, assessing weekly writing assignments, and facilitating small group discussions. During weekly peer mentor-student conversations about academic success tips, co-curricular opportunities, and targeted workshops, they create an atmosphere of trust, responsibility, and encouragement with students.

The First-Year Seminar Peer Mentor Program also benefits peer mentor cohorts. Peer mentors develop leadership skills vital to college and professional success; receive mentorship from faculty supervisors; create a close community within their cohort through shared trainings and experiences; cultivate fairness by engaging in challenging assumptions about cross- and intra-cultural diversity; and participate in professional development opportunities such as presenting at academic conferences, moderating First-Year Seminar events, and networking with campus and community leaders.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society with chapters in all 50 states and nine nations. The purpose of Psi Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Western Texas College (WTC) is to promote scholarship, the development of leadership and service and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students of WTC. Each candidate for membership must have completed 12 hours of associate degree work, with a Grade Point Average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and adhere to the school conduct code and possess recognized qualities of citizenship. Grades for courses completed at other postsecondary institutions will not be considered when determining membership eligibility. A cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5 must be maintained to remain in good standing. For those who meet this criteria, Phi Theta Kappa recognizes and encourages their academic achievement by providing opportunities to participate in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship programming.

Power Hours are designed to help students prepare for exams in select courses. Our Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) tutors are trained in leading group study and material review. Power Hours are led by either an ACE tutor or the instructor themselves. Power Hours are typically held the night before an exam and consist of study tips and general review of the material covered by the exam.

The Primary Care Pathway Program (PCPP) is a partnership between the University of North Texas Health Science Center, University of North Texas, Midland College and Midland Memorial Hospital. The program seeks to provide physicians in the Midland-Odessa and West Texas region by offering an accelerated pathway from a community college to an osteopathic medical school. Students complete their first two years at Midland College, the third year at the University of North Texas, and the final four years at the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to the accelerated curriculum, the program provides advisement and experiences to prepare students for the rigors of medical school. Ultimately, the program aims to recruit students who wish to practice in the Midland area.

The goals of Probation and Suspension Outreach are: 1) To alert those students who have fallen below a 2.0 of their academic standing, and 2) Provide academic counseling and intervention through the utilization of campus resources (tutoring, emergency aid, etc.). Utilizing our early alert system, the Office of Academic Success pulls current grades at midterm each long semester. All students reported at a 2.0 or below are contacted by the Director of Academic Success and offered academic counseling and information concerning campus resources. At the close of term, any student below a 2.0 on academic probation and suspension is directly contacted by the Success Coach (academic advisor) assigned to their major of choice. Students are asked to meet with the Success Coach face to face or virtually, to discuss any struggles, current major and to develop a plan for the next term.

Students were informed of resources available (tutoring, student support services, accommodations, Continuing Education). Of those contacted, 96 students (24.6%) enrolled for the Fall of 2021.

The Public Health Resource Center provides health and well-being services to students and staff with limited funds for healthcare. We created two writing instruction (WI) courses for each discipline where specific aspects of writing within that discipline were taught, practiced, and refined. We encouraged programs to have one WI course early in the curriculum and one later in the curriculum. We worked to align the University Writing Center and Library with these efforts. We offered grants, stipends, and learning experiences for faculty engaged in these efforts.

Ram Camp is an opportunity for incoming students to connect with the campus community, their peers, build community and sense of belonging before classes begin. Retention and Remediation in the School of Health Careers

There are eight programs in the School of Health Careers at Angelina College and each program requires specific prerequisite and corequisite courses. Retention and remediation has two major goals: (1)orientation camp for all students entering programs (2) general requirements of mandatory remediation for any student who is not successful in a unit exam or in a clinical/practicum area.

The target population is a student currently enrolled in one of the eight programs. During orientation camp, a risk factors survey is obtained and even prior to being unsuccessful, the student may be seen by faculty to provide strategies to avoid dropping below the passing benchmark. Identified risk factors include but are not limited to (1) first-generation college student; (2) responsibility for children or other family members (e.g. parents); (3) English as a Second language; (4) employment part-time or full time; (5) socio-economic status; (5) entering overall GPA at the 2.5 level; (6) geographical location in relationship to the main campus.

The Rice Emerging Scholars Program (RESP) is an innovative, residential academic program designed to help first-year students prepare for the challenging pace, depth, and rigor of the STEM curricula at Rice. Unique among programs of its kind at highly selective institutions, RESP's approach to college transition and success is comprehensive, combining a rigorous six-week academic summer bridge program with personalized and holistic mentoring and support for the duration of the college experience.

RESP's mission is to ensure that students of high potential who attended under-resourced high schools, particularly low-income and first-generation students, persist, thrive, and graduate at the same rate as their peers, and that these students achieve their academic and professional aspirations as scientists and engineers.

RESP is designed to ensure that students who would most benefit from the program are not excluded due to cost. Accordingly, RESP Scholars attend the summer program at no cost and receive a stipend for their participation. They also enjoy a personalized array of mentoring and support services throughout their time at Rice.

In fulfilling its charge to help these students meet all the challenges they face, RESP comprehensively addresses their particular academic and navigational needs together with other challenges unique to students from underserved communities. And RESP stands with them from before they matriculate until after they graduate -- this is what it means to provide an environment in which students may "thrive."
