Initially funded by a Title V grant for Hispanic-Serving Institutions from the US Department of Education, CASA is Connecting students to the campus community, Acclimating them to the rigors of academic life, helping them Succeed academically, and preparing them to Achieve and compete in college and beyond. The program guides students through the four CASA phases through three initiatives. Information Technology Enhanced Multidisciplinary Academic Learning Lounges (iMALLS) and the Center for Academic Advising and Transition (CAST) are designed to connect students to resources and opportunities to improve academic preparedness while Meaningfully Aligned Targeted Curriculum for Hispanic Students (MATCH) ensures students are receiving best-fit instruction based on proven methods. These three initiatives encompass twelve activities to engage students in research-based programs that facilitate in students a sense of belonging, influence, competence and efficacy. MATCH activities have assisted in increasing the number of students graduating with a degree or certificate within three years from a baseline of 14% to 26%. Hispanic completion was 25%. CAST tutoring and advising activities assisted in increasing the three-year transfer rate of students from a baseline of 6% to 12%. Hispanic transfer was 11%. iMALL activities have assisted in increasing the fall-to-fall persistence of FTIC fulltime students by 7% over the 2014 baseline of 50%. Hispanic student persistence was 61%.

SFA has identified student wellness and well-being as a critical basic need. To champion this, SFA established the Lumberjack Wellness Network. Founded upon the principles of the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, the Lumberjack Wellness Network was developed to educate the SFA community on student well-being. We empower faculty and staff to have meaningful and helpful conversations with students in need. We equip the community with tools, resources, and appropriate recommendations and referrals, connecting students to the help they need.

We will take the Network and the dimensions of wellness to the next level, with cutting-edge technology, ensuring our staff our current on all best practices and trends within mental health, and rethinking our current physical space to better meet our students' needs. This revision includes the upgrade of our current food pantry operations to include a refrigerator and freezer to allow us to begin offering fresh produce and frozen meats. It also includes breathing life to a currently unutilized green space to offer our campus community a space to relax, refocus, and re-center. It also focuses on the needs of our student-athletes to help them retain, progress, and graduate. This application includes collaboration from across campus, including the Dean of Students Office, Athletics, the Health and Wellness Hub, and Campus Recreation.

These initiatives will help to solidify and advance the Lumberjack Wellness Network. These initiatives will help us meet the needs of our students and help us continue to transition to a place or prevention and pre-intervention rather than reaction.

The purpose of the MSI was to teach men to become leaders within their families and communities. The mission of the group is to enhance and better male students at Galveston College by providing academic support along with professional and personal development. The MSI worked on efforts toward academic, personal, and professional initiatives to enhance the lives and experiences of the group membership as well as the greater campus community. MSI is a jam-packed five-week program held during the month of July exclusively for incoming freshmen students at the University of St. Thomas. The Institute helps our newest Celts prepare for the rigors of UST. When not in class, students build meaningful friendships with fellow incoming freshmen as well as with established Mendenhall Mentors by going on excursions around Houston and activities beyond the classroom.

By the end of July, students will have completed 6 elective credit hours, will have received a head start applying to on-campus jobs, and will be more confident in their abilities to thrive at UST.

Ms. Mendenhall, who founded MSI 15 years ago, gives 30 students in the Institute a $1,000 per semester for up to 8 semesters scholarship. These scholarships are distributed based on need and participation in the program.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: We have found that students who participate in Mendenhall retain at a significantly higher rate than their peers. Our Mendenhallers retain at about a 94% rate and go on to graduate higher than their peers as well. Additionally, our students assume leadership roles more regularly than their peers because of their level of comfort with the institution.

The mental Health Awareness Training CErT program is based on the UHCL Counseling and Mental Health Center's mission, “Connect, Empower, Thrive”. The "Connect, Empower, refer, and Thrive (CErT)", training is a research-based program for UHCL students, faculty, and staff on recognizing signs of mental health issues, connecting to resources, preventing poor mental health outcomes, and ensuring student retention and success. The 2-3-hour training contains modules separately targeting faculty/staff; general students and student leaders; veterans; and students seeking teacher certification. The main learning objectives for this training are for participants to learn to identify emerging signs and symptoms of mental health concerns, be able to distinguish skillful ways to intervene with individuals who are experiencing mental health concerns and make referrals to appropriate services, and be able to identify at least two ways to engage in self-care.

Mindfulness, Stress Reduction and Emotional Intelligence Initiative

This initiative aims to harness the effectiveness of evidence-informed interventions to target mood-related concerns. The goal is to provide campus-wide, multi-modal instruction and engagement in mindfulness, stress reduction, emotional intelligence, and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. This initiative consists of interactive video-based instruction, live workshops, curated on-demand campus reflection/relaxation spaces, self-help resources (individual and utilization in academic classes), campus focused MHFA, and an invited expert speaker or panel event. The expanded dissemination of prevention-focused skills training will serve as a buffer against more severe psychological distress and behavioral concerns, allow students to more fully engage in their academic pursuits/interpersonal relationships, as well as assist the participants in better identifying options to assist those experiencing psychological or emotional distress. These interventions are targeted for both the general student population and numerous smaller student populations that benefit from additional support/attention.

NLC Connect seeks to mitigate enrollment barriers, promoting the retention and graduation of the College's part-time students. At Odessa College, we began our OC Cares journey in the fall of 2019 with the opening of our Wrangler Food Pantry. We added a social worker in February 2021 in our Student Support Services department. This helped to facilitate the distribution of acute emergency aid. Since then, students have reported that their primary needs revolve around housing, transportation, tuition/cost of school related expenses and food. In April of 2021, we added a garden on campus that supplies our Wrangler Food Pantry with fresh produce throughout the year. Our food pantry also has a hygiene supply room to ensure that our students are able to access basic hygiene necessities in addition to food.

What we have seen time after time is that students don’t realize that their needs are an emergency. They feel like someone else’s challenges are more severe than their own. We have worked to debunk that myth for emergency aid distribution in our conversations with students.

Through promotion of emergency aid, we have seen an increase in students utilizing other support services such as our food pantry, mental health services and community resource referrals. As a result of our behavioral intervention seeing an increase in reports surrounding basic needs, we created a separate social services report. We have also instituted a college life coach program where coaches are assigned to freshmen to support them throughout their first year with any resources or communication they might require, as well as checking in with students throughout their semester. We have instituted a student experience survey three times during the semester to identify trends on students curricular, co-curricular and basic needs.

Student Support Services also assists with the Perkins grant.

Online Advising Certification Course

Del Mar College has developed a two-level, asynchronous online training course offered via Canvas, the College’s designated learning management system. In order to achieve the goal of following consistent and effective advising practices, the training course will be made available to faculty and staff members who also serve in advising capacities. The course will be offered twice per year. If there are enough faculty and staff members enrolled, then there will be two sections made available: one for faculty members and one for other personnel who advise students such as chairs, embedded advisors, and enrollment specialists.The College has set a goal of 140 faculty members and 50 staff to complete the Advising Certification Course between 2020-2024.

Peer Mentors are here to help first-year students academically and socially transition to Texas State University during their first year. Peer Mentors are upperclassmen embedded in a first-year seminar course and meet with students twice a semester or more to facilitate a successful first year transition. Peer Mentors are certified through the College Reading and Learning Association International Peer Educator Training Program. The Pathways Academic Assistance Center's (PAAC) mission is to help students become successful and confident academically by: modeling the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Socratic Tutorial strategies by providing the tools and resources necessary to assume responsibility for their own learning; asking higher-level questions to gain a deeper understanding of their rigorous content through critical thinking and inquiry process; and utilizing Cornell note-taking as a method for mastering information, stressing Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). Our tutors understand that students encounter the learning process with different degrees of strength and comfort; therefore, a collaborative approach guides our practice. Tutors and students engage in one-on-one and/or peer conversations about the subject area while sharing knowledge and granting authority to both the tutor and student. We recognize that differences in proficiency, linguistic and cultural background need to be taken into consideration when helping students to become efficient learners.

The Public Health Resource Center provides health and well-being services to students and staff with limited funds for healthcare. Health Services include screenings, testing, treatment and referrals. Wellness Services include stress management, counseling, substance abuse and rehabilitation. In addition, the PHRC works to build resiliency through public health emergency resources and partnerships that aim to prevent/prepare for adverse situations and insure adequate response and recovery.

The Rainy Day Savings Program is designed to help students set aside $500+ within one academic year for a financial emergency. Students open a savings account at our partner credit union and earn up to $100 in cash deposits for doing things like completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meeting with a financial coach. Money in the account can be used for a financial emergency as defined by the individual student. The account is intended to be an easy-to-access quick source of cash when a student experiences a financial emergency. Besides being prepared for a financial emergency, students gain first-hand experience managing a bank account, setting savings goals, and budgeting. The program is open to degree-seeking students enrolled in 6+ credit hours in the semester of program application and who intend to enroll in 6+ credit hours in the subsequent semester. Targeted outreach is conducted to engage students who are Pell and work-study eligible (however, eligiblity for these two forms of financial aid is not a requirement of participation).

EVALUATION STATUS: Data related to program outcomes have been internally and externally collected in the past

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: An evaluation of the first year of the Rainy Day Saving Programs found that program participants grew their savings by an average of $449. The evaulation also suggested significant program impacts on fall-to-spring retention for Hispanic students and students with jobs, and credential attainment for female students.

Ram Camp is an opportunity for incoming students to connect with the campus community, their peers, build community and sense of belonging before classes begin. New students learn to identify and respond to their individual needs based on an understanding of their present circumstances. During the experience new students will participate in large group group games, small group activities, and small group discussions. As a result of participating in Ram Camp, we hope new students will engage in opportunities that promote both a connection to the campus community and their peers.

The Recruitment Student Success Mentor role serves as a liaison to higher education resources and advocates a college-going culture among high school students. Establishes, manages, and visits a higher education resource center at a designated high school/college campus(es). Provides practical assistance, mentorship, and support services to high school students and their families. This is an educative role requiring the Student Success Mentor to create and conduct continuous info-sessions, presentations, and “how-to” workshops related to common college-going procedures (including on a virtual setting). Attends higher education trainings and community events to promote post-secondary education and/or stay up to date with higher education procedures.
