Early Start is a summer bridge program designed to assist incoming freshmen with successfully transitioning from high school to college. All incoming freshmen are eligible, though first-generation and low-income students are especially encouraged to apply. Students enroll in 6 credit-hours of coursework during UNT's 5W2 summer session and live alongside other participants in a designated residence hall. The program offers free room and board, textbooks, and academic supplies. Throughout the session, Early Starters attend weekly workshops focusing on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective College students in addition to community-building events.

The Fearless Leadership Institute (FLI), established at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013, is a holistic development initiative for Black and LatinX college women at UT-Austin, focusing on three core development areas: academic, personal, and professional development. The initiative provides services and hosts events that promote student engagement, sense of belonging, leadership development, and equips participants with the tools necessary for succeeding at the university and beyond. Participants can take advantage of weekly interest groups, exposure trips to Wall Street and Silicon Valley, international study abroad opportunities, graduate school preparation and mentorship from an upperclassmen, graduate students or professional women from the community. Part of FLI’s strategic plan includes extending programming and support to high school students. For the past two years, FLI has hosted a leadership conference for female high school students from around the state of Texas. To further impact high school students FLI will partner with She Needs To Know (SNTK), a local non-profit, to offer group and individual mentorship with the goal of impacting the postsecondary success for the high school participants of SNTK.

Financial and Social Support Services (FSSS)

Financial and Social Support Services (FSSS) is a component of UTEP’s holistic advising model designed to foster financial literacy and wellness by increasing fiscal awareness, and empowering students to make more sound financial decisions.

Master of Social Work (MSW) graduate interns provide students with personalized financial and social support. MSW Interns employ financial social work theories and practices to help students recognize and assess their financial circumstances, with the ultimate goal of identifying methods to establish healthier money habits that lead to improved financial wellness.

FSSS offers services to all UTEP students, regardless of major or classification. The majority of students served are UTEP undergraduates with 0-60 earned credit hours. These students often face a variety of challenges upon entering a four-year institution and adapting to a system that is drastically different from high school or community college. MSW interns are exceptionally equipped to support and assist students with overcoming financial challenges to academic success. This includes, but is not limited to, guiding students on resources to pay for college, managing life expenses, building a budget, establishing credit, understanding financial risks, and strategies for making well-informed financial decisions in the context of each student’s unique circumstances.

FSSS works closely with the Foster Homeless Adopted Resources (FHAR) program, which connects foster, homeless and adopted students with resources to provide support along the path to degree completion.

First-Gen Longhorn is a term at the University of Texas that describes any student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) do not have a four-year degree or higher from an institution of higher learning in the United States. In the fall of 2021, first-generation college students at UT Austin accounted for 23% of the undergraduate student body. The mission of the First-Gen Equity program is to create a community on campus for first-generation students by providing them with a multi-tiered support network and an immersive layering of academic, social and professional experiences, workshops, resources, and events. The families of first-generation college students play a key role in their students’ success. All incoming first-generation students and their families are invited to attend the UT Dallas First-Generation Family Orientation. To promote the orientation, UT Dallas mails postcard invitations and first-generation-specific new student guidebooks, that include access to an online Spanish language version, to invitees. The materials provide advice on how to interpret important dates on the academic calendar, descriptions of language found in course syllabi, and helpful tips for navigating resources, and a page of First-Generation Student Support Network member contacts in key campus departments. First-Generation Family Orientation content includes presentations by a variety of campus departments, a discussion regarding UT Dallas culture and insights about what their student can expect, greater explanations of some University policies and processes, more information about University resources with insights about why they matter and how to use them, and critical steps to ensure that students efficiently transition through each semester and maximize opportunities. Content is framed to reinforce the role of families in student academic and social success and their value in cultivating student belonging, wellbeing, and resilience. The First-Generation Family Orientation is hosted primarily via YouTube to ensure maximum accessibility with the multi-language closed captioning options. During the orientation, families can ask current first-generation students, parents of former UT Dallas students, and bilingual staff questions. The desired outcomes of First-Generation Family Orientation include attendees feeling better equipped to support their scholars, increased familiarity with campus resources, and increased comfort approaching the university for assistance.

When surveyed, 82% of students reported that the LLC helped them to connect with other first-gen students and 69% said it helped them understand how they belong at UT.

The First-Year Experience (FYE) Office supports every first-year student as they make The University of Texas at Austin their new home. FYE engages all new Longhorns in mentorship and interdisciplinary, rigorous academic programs that cultivate connection to the UT community in order to build strong socio-academic foundations throughout their transition to UT Austin. The University College’s First Year course offerings assist students as they transition from high school to the university and have been tailored to assist students based on a number of criteria including, major, prior college hours, class rank and academic performance.The UNIV 1301 Learning Framework course is the most popular and widely taken first-year experience course offered. Here, students will learn about the psychology of learning and develop the skills that will enable them to be successful college students. The Learning Framework course is organized by college, so students will also learn about program specific requirements depending on their major. In addition to the Learning Framework course, UTRGV also offers, UNIV 1101: Self-Discovery for Academic and Career Success. This one-hour course connects students to university resources as they navigate their first year at UTRGV while also helping them identify and develop a plan to achieve their academic and professional goals. Finally, the UNIV 1001 and UNIV 1300: Living and Working by Design courses encourage new students to think about and build out multiple college experiences by incorporating design thinking principles. Here students are given a safe and supportive space to think about possible majors and careers without any fear of judgment or critique. Students then work through potential major/career pathways by thinking about the actions they need to take and the resources they need in order to make their pathway(s) a reality.

Foster Homeless Adopted Resources (FHAR) is a component of UTEP's holistic advising model designed to provide comprehensive academic and social wellness services to students who were adopted or aged out of foster care or are experiencing housing insecurity.

FHAR staff members assess students needs for social wellness services, address basic needs insecurities (food, housing, and transportation), provide crisis intervention and connect students to appropriate resources on campus and in the community.

UTEP students in crisis must manage various challenges that conflict with academic responsibilities. The FHAR program facilitates immediate, holistic institutional support, to ensure these students persist through to degree completion.

Generación STEM

Recognizing the importance of STEM education in preparing the increasingly diverse generations that will make up the American workforce, this project strives to generate STEM student success at Texas State University (TXST) for Hispanic and Low Income (HLI) students who will become our next scientific and technical professionals. There are four primary activities designed to address persistent challenges in STEM education and career attainment for HLI students. Activity 1 will create a Peer Education Program with Success Coaches that will serve all incoming HLI freshman and transfer students in their first year at TXST who are identified through a predictive analytics factor-specific model as needing high-support during their transition to college. Activity 2 will improve the transfer navigation process and increase transfer matriculation to TXST through creation of a Transfer Articulation and Navigation Center. Center staff will initiate new transfer articulation agreements with 2-year HSIs, produce an online repository of course equivalency guides and other information pertinent for transfer students, and provide direct student transfer advising to facilitate the transfer process. Activity 3 will create a STEM Workforce Advisory Council to build collaborations with STEM employers leading to expanded Co-Op and work-based experiences for HLI STEM students; additionally, a new Work-based Experience Preparatory program will be implemented to provide targeted students with professional development improving their competitiveness for employment upon graduation. Activity 4 will provide professional development in culturally responsive teaching methods for STEM faculty teaching core courses that will enable faculty to make lasting changes to their instructional methods to improve HLI students' success.

GradUP is our commitment to the success of every Lone Star College-University Park student from the time they apply to the time they graduate. We invest in student success by continuously improving our student services, launching innovative, student-focused initiatives, and prioritizing professional development and training opportunities for our faculty and staff. Our message to students is: “You commit, We commit, You graduate”. LSC-University Park is empowered to accomplish our GradUP goals; our faculty, staff and administration are committed to advancing graduation rates to 50% for our first-time in college (FTIC), full time students. It’s our culture to provide all students with access to support and resources to help them overcome barriers and achieve success and completion. By focusing and measuring results on smaller groups, the college can ensure that its plans and actions will lead to growth and success for all students.GradUP promotes the value of earning an associate degree or certificate, including a shorter and less expensive academic journey, and seamless transfer of credits to four-year institutions. In addition, the program communicates the value of alternative academic schedules – like the 3x20 degree plan, which allows students to take 20 hours annually for three years to earn their associate degree. GradUP has become a guidepost for the college’s dedicated administration, faculty, staff and, most important, students. Ingrained in the very culture of LSC-University Park, GradUP continues to grow and push the needle on student success.

The Graduation Help Desk helps ensure every student graduates. Any member of the UTA community can contact the Graduation Help Desk to assist students. The Academic Success Center staff supports all students by addressing complex academic and non-academic issues that hinder students' academic performance or path to graduation. The Graduation Help Desk has impacted both practice and procedure at the University of Texas at Arlington. Practice and procedure have been impacted through routine partnership with academic departments and the advising community to begin preparing students for timely degree completion earlier in their academic career. Partnerships with the Office of the Registrar, Office of Financial Aid, Student Money Management Center have also contributed to an increase in degree progression and completion.

Our mission is to be a convener and a catalyst actively supporting Hispanic Serving Institution students and alumni who strive to launch their careers and achieve a greater impact on the world. To do this, the HSI Career Collaborative informs and connects three critical audiences: talent, HSIs, and employers. The goal of the HSI Career Collaborative is to raise the recruiting profile of HSIs to companies across the country.In raising the recruitment profile, we also increase relationship capacity with companies that may offer internship and other experiential learning opportunities.
