JH presented the BRICCS-TX hub website. She showed participants where to locate the registration button, and how to navigate meeting information for Research Challenges and Opportunities. CM shared the fourth sub-group BRICCS repository will serve for events, grants and other opportunities that relate to research. | N/A JH will have the fourth sub-group activated by November meeting. |

See PowerPoint: CM stated that cooperative research is joint students research projects between courses from two or more institutions.CM shared two subject examples of art and biology. CM mentioned that his institution Sam Houston State has the largest art collection in the nation. CM asked the audience what other opportunities this group might see that would be beneficial to their student, or students across the state working in a cooperative research environment? - Alisa Carter, faculty from Hill College stated their institution environmental instructor, is active on taking his students to collect data and could see him be a part of this group.
- Alisa Cater shared their institution biology and computer science departments could also benefit from the opportunity of joining too.
- Lyn Garner, librarian director from San Jacinto College North Campus, stated her vision is to reach out to all universities in Texas to bring this collaboration with community colleges on research opportunities.
- CM expressed the perception that community colleges do not engage in research studies, he stated there is more of applied research at the community level than theorical.
- CM shared with his friend, who is a biologist at the University of Georgia about BRICCS-TX. The instructor has an interest for all schools in Texas to collect data on his behalf. CM replied that students need to be taught by their instructors, the skills on how to be a good scientist.
- Alisa Carter continued to share another excellent example of their institution dual credit student’s that assisted Tarleton State University on data collecting during the recent eclipse in April 2024.
- Trent Dawson, faculty from University of Texas at Arlington asked CM, what kind of community college research has been done to his knowledge? CM gave an example of his experience in Tulsa Oklahoma Community College in their nursing program in level one trauma applied research.
- SKJ shared San Jacinto College Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium flyer that will take place on December 6, 2024. SKJ encouraged BRICCS-TX participants to attend the event.
- SKJ mentioned that San Jacinto College North Campus biology professors are working together with Rice University in research.
- SKJ stated that students in physics at San Jacinto College South Campus are providing and tracking systems for NASA.
CM asked the audience what other challenges this group might consider as initial problems pertaining to research? - Lyn Garner stated the process to disseminate the information on how to collaborate between community college and universities.
- Alisa Carter expressed the lack of support systems in smaller institutions than larger universities. She stated how important it is to identify the disconnection and to assert the solutions for the RIB. (Routing Information Base)
- CM shared that Van Howell, Co-PI of BRICCS-TX and instructor at South Plains Community College had difficulty about the new policies of information security. CM took the initiative to share resources with Van.
- Alisa Carter shared that her institution was able to complete their NSF grant from huge support with BRICCS representatives.
- Alisa Carter discussed that her department made plans to attend the eight-week model pertaining to research in short timeframe, 8-weeks.
- SKJ suggested that Alisa team might create the course pathway into separate sections, for a building block learning style for students to enhance the knowledge in that curriculum.
- Lyn Garner suggested the research process is not based on the student rather than the department, whether the course is 8, 12, 14, or 16 weeks the overall contribution stems from students’ involvement within that timeframe.
