Our program's core features include 1) proactively identifying students who have basic needs insecurities or are at risk of these insecurities, 2) connecting students to resources both on campus and off campus to minimize the effects of these insecurities, 3) communicating with students, faculty, and staff about the services offered to the students, 4) training faculty and staff on how to recognize and offer assistance to students who might be experiencing basic needs insecurities, 5) making the local community aware of the needs of our students, 6) reducing stigma around basic needs insecurities, and 7) engaging in activities and events around campus to give students a sense of connectedness and belonging. Our goals are 1) to strengthen and expand resources available to the students through collaborative partnerships, 2) to support students' social emotional, and academic needs with a focus on underserved students, and 3) to increase awareness and utilization of resources available to meet the basic needs. The objectives include 1) increasing the annual low socioeconomic FTIC persistence rate to 60%, 2) Increase the average low socioeconomic FTIC successful course completion rate to 70%, and 3) to reach 25% of FTIC students.

Blinn Navigators is a collaborative effort between student services and academic affairs to identify and connect trained staff and faculty with (1) students who have aged out of the foster care system and (2) students on academic probation with a GPA between 1.5 and 2.0 who are at risk of losing their financial aid. Training includes presentations on communication, available support services, financial aid issues, student success and career guidance resources, and similar topics. Once trained, faculty and staff are assigned 3-4 students each semester to assist and direct to needed services.

The BBS program at Galveston College is designed to provide academic and student support services for approximately 206 first-generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities. The goals of BBS are to increase student retention in classes, completion of certificates and degrees, graduation from college, and transfer to universities. The CARE Program was designed to assist with academic difficulties by enhancing the learning experience of its students. CARE creates an academic support network focused on the individual needs of each student and provides strategic resources for students to make well-educated choices for the remainder of their educational career. The process involves identifying students who will be on probation, or who are currently on probation, with whom we can help get back on track via self-assessments, Success Agreements, meetings with the Retention Coordinator, and various prescribed agreements, such as professional tutoring, mentoring, and academic coaching.

C.O.R.E. is required for FITC students or students that have been out of college 5+ years. Face to face attendance through one of the 10 offered dates is recommended, but an online option is available.
C.O.R.E. is an all day event that walks students through non-cognitive and career assessments, plan courses for first semester, make advising appointment, learn more about their pathway of choice, assign a faculty mentor, and take them to various resources on campus with speakers at each location, via a campus tour.

At the heart of The Cardinal Advocacy and Resource Center is the conviction that education is a basic human right, essential to a thriving democracy. We recognize that to support our students through completion, students often need assistance outside of the classroom. Affording students the tools to reduce basic needs insecurity and learn to advocate for themselves is a priority at the CARC. Available to all students enrolled in at least 3 hours, the CARC is more than just a food and clothing pantry. Equitable access to basic needs includes assistance for, but not limited to, transportation, child-care, housing, food, technology, and emergency funding. Holistic support is also available to meet students where they area. We work to ensure students basic needs are met so they can focus on their academic success. Learning to be an advocate for themselves is another important function of the CARC. To that end, we provide students with an updated and comprehensive resource guide to allow students to easily locate and find services at the time they need it.

Career Academy is a dual credit workforce program in a high demand career that leads to a college level 1 certificate while in high school or the summer immediately following high school graduation. Austin Community College offers five Career Academies to help you land an in-demand job as soon as possible in the field of construction, education, manufacturing, health sciences, or IT. Career Academy classes are intended for workforce entry, not university transfer. However, some credits may be applied toward an associate degree. Tuition and fees are waived for participating in-district students. Out-of-district students qualify for significant discounts and pay just $150 per course. These discounts are good for up to 12 courses, after which regular tuition and fees are assessed for both groups. Classes are taught by ACC faculty on ACC campuses (or virtually, when necessary).

The Career/Technical supply reimbursement program allows for grant funds to alleviate financial burdens on students in specific career and technical education programs. Hence, breaking down barriers for students. The program reimburses students up to $250 for out-of-pocket expenses. The expenses are program specific and are required by the program. Nursing (RN/LVN), Pharmacy Technician, Emergency Medical Services, and Surgical Technology program expenses may include badges, scrubs/uniforms/lab coats, watches, stethoscope, shoes, electronic device, and blood pressure cuff. Welding could include the student's welding hood and gloves. Barber and Cosmetology expenses could include the required student kit (manikin heads, clippers, shears, combs, brushes, hair dryers, curling irons, etc). Students have been very appreciative of the reimbursement program. Many, as we know, don't have extra funds for the additional costs that financial aid can't cover.

The Career and Technical Education Robo Recruiter was designed as an outreach mechanism to attract prospective students for CTE Programs, specifically prospective students in special populations and nontraditional gender fields. The goal is to enhance awareness of Associate of Applied Science Degree program offerings at the Blinn College District while providing labor market information regarding these career fields. The Robo Recruiter has an engaging interface which students can select the career option they want to explore. Labor market information regarding the career and training available at Blinn will be provided through the interface. The students will also have the option to provide contact information and connect with a Blinn advisor directly from the Robo Recruiter. The Robo Recruiter interface is held by a mannequin dressed in attire representing a CTE field.

ACC makes childcare scholarships available to low-income student parents. The core features of the childcare scholarship program are 1) case management and 2) parent choice. Students who accept a childcare scholarship must agree to participate in intensive case management with a Student Advocate to help with clarity of goals and decisionmaking, referrals to additional supports and on-going problem-solving and personal support. Students who receive the scholarship may select the childcare provider of their choice. ACC arranges for payment directly with the provider. Students must pay the difference between the amount of their scholarship and the total cost of care charged by the provider. The goals of the childcare scholarships are 1) to improve the semester to semester persistence rates of student parents and 2) to improve the graduation rates of student parents. Funding for the program come from ACC's Perkins grant and from institutional sources.

Today’s college attendees are more mobile than any time in history. They have many choices to complete a credential of value, and college hopping is commonplace. Unfortunately, this results in situations where students have completed almost all their requirements but left without a credential. The population of “almost grads” is growing, creating a dearth of qualified employees in the workforce. Through ODC, three North Texas higher education institutions actively engaged with “almost grads” to provide them the assistance they needed to complete a credential of value. ODC began by extracting students within 15 credit hours of credential completion. Accelerating Student Success funds encouraged students to enroll when they faced barriers such as not enough time to complete a FAFSA, having excessive hour fees, or a small financial incentive to re-enroll. ODC helped cover the remaining credits to graduation without any further roadblocks…just a carrot to convince students to complete their graduation goals.

SHSU is a partner of Navigate EAB and utilizes this technology as our primary student success management system. The Coordinated Care Network is a function of Navigate EAB and has been employed at SHSU as a retention-based partnership across several divisions. The Coordinated Care Network supports student success by bridging institutional efforts in receiving and triaging student alerts and referrals through Campus Connect (Navigate EAB). When faculty or staff issue an alert or referral, Campus Connect is configured to enact a chain of technology driven events to connect the student with the expert department who then provides appropriate intervention. Additionally, we target high-needs students to submit an alert or referral on themselves to receive assistance with their particular need(s). Overall, students who are alerted through the Coordinated Care Network and/or self-alert process experience positive gains in credit completion, term GPA outcomes, and persistence rates.

The corequisite model at Amarillo College, for math and English, is a paired model with a 3-hour transfer course and a 3-hour support course. The corequisite model decreases time to completion by enrolling academically underprepared students in transfer-level classes, thereby eliminating the elongated timeline of the traditional prerequisite developmental education pathway. Academically underprepared students are treated as a cohort, enrolling in both sections for a total of 6 hours, and are not commingled in the transfer-level course. The support course functions like a lab or workshop and does not have a separate Developmental Education curriculum. Amarillo College uses embedded tutors in the support course to assist the instructor with one-on-one and group tutoring sessions. The transfer-level courses are: English Composition I, College Algebra, Mathematics for Business & Social Sciences, Contemporary Mathematics, and College Algebra for STEM Majors.

C.R.A.S.H. is a faculty development program that lasts over the course of one school year. The program begins with a 3-day workshop aimed at teaching faculty culturally relevant pedagogy. At the end of the 3-day workshop faculty choose an inquiry project to run in one of their courses that involves making a specific pedagogical change and collecting data on that pedagogical change. Over the fall semester the faculty teach the course with the pedagogical change and collect data on the effectiveness of the change. In the spring semester they analyze and interpret their data and then present their project to an audience of their peers.
One goal of this program is to increase the use of culturally relevant and inclusive teaching practices so that students feel a greater sense of community and belonging as well as reach higher learning gains in their courses. A secondary goal of this program is to increase the use of systematic inquiry of pedagogical techniques in courses across campus. By increasing the use of systematic inquiry faculty will gain more insight into their own teaching practices and their students learning so that they are able to better serve the population of students that they have.
