The Texas College STEP (Summer Transition Enrichment Program) is a five-week summer residential program that prepares incoming freshmen to become successful in their chosen academic fields at Texas College. The program is designed to provide these students with an immersion experience illuminating the life of an effective college student from an academic and social perspective.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: 75% of the students that enrolled in the Texas College STEP Program were retained in College and completed a 2-year or 4-year degree program. The program has been very beneficial to student enrichment and the retention of first year college students.

Student Development and Mentoring (SDM) provides peer mentoring, academic coaching, and developmental education programs for first-time in college (FTIC) students, students who are not college ready based on TSI Scores, and students identified as being at-risk by faculty or academic performance metrics. Academic Coaching provides support for students in extreme academic distress while peer mentoring provides opportunities for all FTIC students to engage with sophomore, junior, and senior mentors who connect them to campus resources and help with social and academic transition to the university.

This course is required of all FTIC freshmen. It includes material on college success, a service learning project, and requirements to attend academic, health-related, and social events on campus. It also includes a financial literacy component and a unit on budgeting.

For students who are TSI-incomplete in math or English/reading, there are special sections of this course that include content-specific remediation. Those special sections are linked to gateway math and English courses and take the place of traditional remedial/developmental education.

Susan Harwood Grants are awarded to provide training and education programs for employers and workers on the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces and to inform workers of their rights and employers of their responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act. Targeted Topic grants focus on training workers and employers on occupational safety and health hazards associated with one of the selected OSHA-selected training topics. OSHA selected topics vary from year to year and are selected based on fatal statistics, national emphasis programs, and pending regulations. Topics are separated into general industry, construction, and other. Safety is paramount, especially in the warehousing field which employs more than half a million people across the nation. South Texas College's goal is to help to reduce the number of work-related accidents, injuries, and deaths in STC’s service area by conducting training in the Targeted Topic of Warehousing. Today, more than ever, building a strong pipeline of skilled American workers is critical for companies to grow their business and compete in the 21st century global economy. TJC recognized a need to provide additional supports to students enrolled in co-requisite mathematics courses. The College obtained a grant to implement a mathematics lab in fall 2020. The lab utilizes faculty and peer tutors to provide assistance to students. Any student who fails the first exam in a co-requisite math course is required to visit the math lab to discuss study strategies and/or receive one-on-one tutoring over difficult math concepts. The lab was fully operational and open to students in summer 2021.

Student Success Services (SSS) is a TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program’s mission is to help eligible students succeed at Weatherford College (WC), graduate and/or transfer to a university to complete a degree. SSS participants are provided personal academic advising, individual development plans, tutoring and supplemental instruction, financial aid assistance, personal counseling, career advising, transfer assistance through campus tours and cooperative advising with transfer admissions offices, and cultural enrichment. All of these services are provided to WC students at no cost to the student. To be eligible, students must be enrolled at WC, be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., and meet one or more of the following requirements: have a family income within federal low-income guidelines, be a first-generation student, or a student with a documented disability.

Article Abstract: "In response to concerns about the additional costs and time-to-degree associated with traditional developmental education programs, several states and postsecondary systems have implemented corequisite reform where academically underprepared students take both a developmental education course and college-level course in the same subject area within a single semester. Texas is one of the first and most diverse states to require all public institutions to scale-up corequisite developmental education. In this study, we use longitudinal survey data from the population of public two-year and four-year colleges and universities in Texas to examine heterogeneity in institutional responses to implementation of a statewide corequisite developmental education reform throughout the 4-year scale-up timeline. We provide insight into how challenges, costs, and data-informed efforts differ for postsecondary institutions that were compliant versus non-compliant with the annual statewide targeted participation rates for corequisite enrollment. We conclude with implications for policy and practice to better support statewide corequisite developmental education reform."

To address the growing number of TSI (Texas Success Initiative) math incomplete students who may not be college ready as they come to campus, UNT is providing supplemental instruction/tutoring/testing for TSI incomplete students, including the math platform and resources for success. Students who have graduated high school and are TSI incomplete will receive online or face-to-face math EdReady platform instruction with the goal of achieving a passing rate on the platform and being TSI complete by the time the students start their freshman year of classes. In addition, we completed a communication campaign with two area high schools to encourage TSI complete status before UNT admitted students arrive at orientation in August.
