The proposed planning project includes four areas of review by TWU that will enable sound decision-making as the university expands access to and streamlines high-quality proactive advising. The planning project includes the following elements:
1. Conduct a comprehensive review of academic advising at TWU including organization structure, staffing levels, and approaches to academic advising.
2. Learn how to scale proactive academic advising and intervention throughout the university including the viability of implementing retention/student success grants for students.
3. Review of pre-matriculation academic advising practices including prospective applicant services for both first-time-in-college and transfer students with particular emphasis on high-demand majors.
4. Develop and conduct internal research and review of emerging best practices for student intervention.

Parallel Planning Academic Advising is a new initiative within the Pioneer Center for Student Excellence to increase the retention and persistence rates for undergraduate students at Texas Woman's University. This program specifically targets undergraduate students pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College of Nursing, which is the largest, and one of the most competitive second admit programs at TWU. The goal of the program is to use parallel planning as part of academic advising's proactive advising strategy to increase the retention and persistence of pre-nursing students. Using parallel planning as a intervention, pre-nursing students are encouraged to explore and identify alternative career paths and degree programs should they no longer be eligible or wish to pursue the nursing program. The Parallel Planning Academic Advising program has three objectives: 1) to track the enrollment of currently enrolled pre-nursing students using pre-registration status, full-time enrollment, and academic standing; 2) to educate pre-nursing students about alternative pathways to degree completion; and 3) to prioritize academic advising for first-year students with less than 30 earned credit hours.

Promise Summer Bridge

College Promise Programs (CPPs) were created to address college access, affordability, equity, and inclusion for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Texas Woman's University (TWU) has partnered with several area CPPs in the last few years to support the initiative of making college enrollment and completion a reality for students. The target populations for the program are first-generation college students, low-income students, and students from underrepresented backgrounds. During the summer of 2021, TWU launched its pilot Summer Bridge program where a group of incoming students were invited to participate in a three-part summer experience. Part one included a two-day, overnight experience on-campus, part two included a five week virtual workshop series, and part three was early fall residence hall move-in and participation in a retreat. The Promise Summer Bridge program has three goals for students following their participation in the program: 1) students will be able to connect with on-campus resources and support services, before the first day of school; 2) students will leave feeling a sense of belonging at TWU; and 3) students will feel more prepared for the start of school.

DELIVERY FORMAT: The program has a hybrid format.

PROGRAM SCALE: Medium-scale (reaches between 10 and 25 percent of its target population)

APPROXIMATE PARTICIPANTS SERVED IN 2021-22: 350

HOW TO ENROLL: Participants are automatically enrolled in this program if they meet eligibility requirements

EVALUATION STATUS: Data related to program outcomes have been internally collected in the past

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: Data indicated that students believed the program valuable and would recommend the program to other students. Additionally, they felt connected to the university as a result of having participated in the Bridge program.
