The I’m First – UT Tyler program is a program that services the needs of first-generation college students on main campus as well as satellite campuses and those undertaking online coursework. This program understands that each first-generation college student experience is different from the next (and many of those experiences are based in intersectional identities), so our program is centered on information sharing, advocacy, and connections to UT Tyler students, faculty, and resources. We strive to provide a sense of belonging within our campus community, which is key to not only retention and completion but the success of each student’s journey with us. As such, one of our primary methods is advocacy on campus through open and accessible communication channels – we are the touchpoint for all first-gen student questions about anything UT Tyler or college related and direct them or take them to the appropriate office to aid them.

Every month we send out a checklist newsletter to all first-generation college students (including international students and non-degree seeking students) that highlights upcoming university deadlines, breaks, campus community events (like blood drives, game and movie nights, holiday celebrations, etc), and links to all resources like tutoring and supplemental instruction. In addition to the checklist, we have created a regularly-updated glossary of all university terms (with links to the appropriate contacts and webpages) that is posted on our website and circulated accordingly.

We also host our own events, such as scholarship application workshops in which students may come to learn how to find the best scholarships for their situations and demographics, how to write the best essay, and how to submit them. This is an all-day, 2-day service offered in-person, but online and distance students are free to make unlimited one-on-one appointments for the same purpose as well as for resume review. We also host come-and-go social events. Further, we honor these students by providing first-generation stoles at every graduation and present them at a free banquet for them and their families. They are also available for pickup at graduation check-in. We host tables at preview days and homeschool days with swag and information, and our newly formed student organization will have a presence at orientation as well as host their own peer-centered events.

Lastly, beginning in the 2022 fall semester, the first-generation living-learning community will open its first wing in an on-campus housing unit. It will have its own first-generation RA as well as weekly meetings with our office’s staff that serve to bring the university’s resources to the students directly, such as advising, tutoring, safe zone training, study halls, library liaison tutorials, and more. Further, these students will also participate in servant-leadership opportunities and get to experience the Tyler community on field trips.

The Individual Academic Plan (IAP) is designed to help students set a tutoring plan for the semester and establish appointments with the Student Success Coordinator to track academic progress towards success and course completion. The program's target population is students who are placed on financial aid suspension for the following reasons: (1.) failed to meet the quality (2.00 GPA) and quantity (67% completion rate) standards. (2.) failed to meet the 'probation' requirements. The IAP goal is for the student to be advised on the academic goals outlined and requires students to achieve a "C" or better in courses in order to bring their GPA or completion rate up.

The Integrated Education and Training (IET)- Contextualized Learning allows students seeking a high school equivalency credential or English language attainment the opportunity to participate and complete a credential of value that could ultimately lead to a career advancement and/or 'stackable' higher education degrees. The IET skills training leads to a high wage, high demand occupation and runs simultaneously with the GED and ESL program, additionally including a course that is focused on the reading, writing, verbal, and/or math skills needed to achieve and exceed in the training and career field. The IET program allows a student to accelerate the transition between an academic readiness program into workforce preparation training, which ultimately leads to credential completion and employment. The IET program provides tuition and supplies for those that qualify to help Adult Education students transition to a workforce Credential of Value while providing additional academic support to ensure student success.

Intensive Transfer Pathway Program (IPP)

To meet the challenge expressed by demographic and enrollment changes, Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi has created the intensive transfer pathway program (IPP) focusing on both Del Mar College and Coastal Bend College to actively market and host services to community college students in academic pathway programs. This program provides on-campus outreach and advising sessions each semester as well as immersive visit programs at TAMUCC to facilitate enrollment, advising, and transition from the two-year to the four-year institution. This program is facilitated through activities planned and executed by the Office of Recruitment and Admissions under the guidance of the Division of Enrollment Management.

Students selected in the cohort (up to 80 each year) will receive $ 1,000 each fall and spring to help support their transitional activities and ease the their cost burden as new transfer students. The students in each cohort will be required to participate in the engagement activities and meet satisfactory academic and enrollment requirements. Student success will be measured relative to their persistence from the initial year of transfer to the second.

The International Leadership Program (ILP) is designed for students looking to enhance their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. The program provides opportunities for professional development while serving the global SMU community. This program is open to ALL globally-minded SMU students - domestic, international, graduate, and undergraduate. SMU's International Student & Scholar Services office (ISSS) is home to the International Leadership Program. It is the goal of the ISSS office for international students to have meaningful experiences at SMU and to help them navigate and take advantage of the resources offered to students. Leaders are always ready to offer advice about living in the U.S., answer any questions about resources off/on-campus, and serve as a welcoming guide to new students. International Leaders enhance their leadership skills through regular leadership trainings, leading projects of their own design that enhance the international student experience, and providing support for in-person and virtual programs hosted by the International Student and Scholar Services Office. Participants are challenged to think critically about gaps in the support of global students and use this analysis to strategize programs or resources to address them. In doing so alongside their cohort peers, leaders develop the skills necessary to effectively work with those of different educational, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.

TVCC faculty bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the TVCC student body. Advancing opportunities for mentorships and students to demonstrate their learned skills by networking with their community is a critical aspect to encourage student engagement during classroom instruction. The Learning Symposium offers opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills to create projects meaningful to them and the community they care about. The concept of the learning symposium is new at TVCC, but resembles the concept of a student research symposium at 4-year universities. The goals for creating an annual symposium are to:
• Provide a structure for faculty – student mentorships in specific content areas which students are passionate and interested in.
• Inspire cross-circular learning experiences.
• Provide a focus on academic achievement for TVCC students.
• Increase community involvement with TVCC students.
• Foster deeper connections between Terrell, Kaufman, Athens, Palestine, and dual credit students. (The symposium would be hosted by rotating TVCC campuses in Athens, Terrell, and Palestine yearly, with dual credit and embedded faculty encouraged to participate.)
• Gain regional recognition from other colleges within the second and third years by offering invitations for their students to join.

Students and faculty are encouraged to think of ways they can connect classroom instruction to service opportunities in their communities and demonstrate skills they have developed. This is known as Applied Learning Opportunities.
We are striving to recognize the knowledge students bring to the learning environment and connect with communities and seek real-life experiences. By encouraging students to participate in the Learning Symposium, we are asking students to apply what they are learning to a whole task in a form that is relevant and appropriate to their goals and skills. Areas in which to frame a project include, but are not limited to: Service Learning/Community Service, Research/Field Study, Arts, Leadership, Civil Engagement, and Internships.

A panel of judges volunteer and are present during the symposium to view displays and participate during the demonstrations. Students’ submissions are judged within two categories:
• Most Impactful: $500 award
• Most Creative: $500 award

The Lions Den Classroom is a retention-focused initiative to engage the Deans of the college with more impactful interactions with students majoring in the College of Education and Human Services. It is our belief that students want to have more of a connection with the Deans and want to know who they are. As the Deans visit classrooms with goodies throughout the academic year, it allows students to ask questions, understand the college on a deeper level, and provides them with the opportunity to get a firsthand view of the Deans. SFA has identified student wellness and well-being as a critical basic need. To champion this, SFA established the Lumberjack Wellness Network. Founded upon the principles of the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, the Lumberjack Wellness Network was developed to educate the SFA community on student well-being. We empower faculty and staff to have meaningful and helpful conversations with students in need. We equip the community with tools, resources, and appropriate recommendations and referrals, connecting students to the help they need.

We will take the Network and the dimensions of wellness to the next level, with cutting-edge technology, ensuring our staff our current on all best practices and trends within mental health, and rethinking our current physical space to better meet our students' needs. This revision includes the upgrade of our current food pantry operations to include a refrigerator and freezer to allow us to begin offering fresh produce and frozen meats. It also includes breathing life to a currently unutilized green space to offer our campus community a space to relax, refocus, and re-center. It also focuses on the needs of our student-athletes to help them retain, progress, and graduate. This application includes collaboration from across campus, including the Dean of Students Office, Athletics, the Health and Wellness Hub, and Campus Recreation.

These initiatives will help to solidify and advance the Lumberjack Wellness Network. These initiatives will help us meet the needs of our students and help us continue to transition to a place or prevention and pre-intervention rather than reaction.

Mentoring and Advising Patriots to Success

The UT Tyler's Mentoring and Advising Patriots to Success program (MAPS) is targeted to FTIC freshmen who are on probation as a result of their first semester with us. These students are required to participate in a credit/no-credit success seminar in the spring during which various topics are discussed. The main objective, however, is attained through individual meetings between students and a staff-level mentor who help the students identify their reasons for academic struggles followed up with assistance in creating a plan to get back on track.

At Odessa College, we began our OC Cares journey in the fall of 2019 with the opening of our Wrangler Food Pantry. We added a social worker in February 2021 in our Student Support Services department. This helped to facilitate the distribution of acute emergency aid. Since then, students have reported that their primary needs revolve around housing, transportation, tuition/cost of school related expenses and food. In April of 2021, we added a garden on campus that supplies our Wrangler Food Pantry with fresh produce throughout the year. Our food pantry also has a hygiene supply room to ensure that our students are able to access basic hygiene necessities in addition to food.

What we have seen time after time is that students don’t realize that their needs are an emergency. They feel like someone else’s challenges are more severe than their own. We have worked to debunk that myth for emergency aid distribution in our conversations with students.

Through promotion of emergency aid, we have seen an increase in students utilizing other support services such as our food pantry, mental health services and community resource referrals. As a result of our behavioral intervention seeing an increase in reports surrounding basic needs, we created a separate social services report. We have also instituted a college life coach program where coaches are assigned to freshmen to support them throughout their first year with any resources or communication they might require, as well as checking in with students throughout their semester. We have instituted a student experience survey three times during the semester to identify trends on students curricular, co-curricular and basic needs.

Student Support Services also assists with the Perkins grant.

The Pathways Academic Assistance Center's (PAAC) mission is to help students become successful and confident academically by: modeling the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Socratic Tutorial strategies by providing the tools and resources necessary to assume responsibility for their own learning; asking higher-level questions to gain a deeper understanding of their rigorous content through critical thinking and inquiry process; and utilizing Cornell note-taking as a method for mastering information, stressing Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). Our tutors understand that students encounter the learning process with different degrees of strength and comfort; therefore, a collaborative approach guides our practice. Tutors and students engage in one-on-one and/or peer conversations about the subject area while sharing knowledge and granting authority to both the tutor and student. We recognize that differences in proficiency, linguistic and cultural background need to be taken into consideration when helping students to become efficient learners.

The core of the Pathway to Sophomore Status is to provide additional support to freshmen students that did not earn 30 credit hours by the second semester of their freshman year. The program provides additional advising support, degree review, registration assistance and programming specific to this population of students to provide academic support, encouragement and access to any wraparound services needed to reach Sophomore Status by the end of their 3rd semester (summer/fall).

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: After 1 year in the program, students in Fall 2021 had a persistance rate of almost 70%, almost 20% higher than the previous year's persistance rate.

The Peer Leaders within Residence Life program provides opportunities for SMU upper-class students to serve in a leadership capacity while acting as liaisons for campus departments. Partnering campus departments include the Office of Wellbeing, Engage Dallas, the Office of General Education, and the Office of the Chaplain & Religious Life. Each residential community primarily serves first and second-year students who are the primary target audience for the peer leader program. There are four peer leaders dedicated to each residential community, a Peer Academic Leader, Engage Dallas Student Director, Spiritual Life Mentor, and a Wellbeing Education Student Team representative. Each peer leader partners with the Residential Community Director and Faculty in Residence to facilitate monthly programs focused on well-being, academic support, spiritual development, and local community service engagement.

The Peer Leader program aims to ensure students are aware of and utilizing on-campus support resources, are connected socially on-campus and to the local Dallas community, and are supported in their transition to college in order to promote holistic wellness that leads to student success and retention.
