MSI is a jam-packed five-week program held during the month of July exclusively for incoming freshmen students at the University of St. Thomas. The Institute helps our newest Celts prepare for the rigors of UST. When not in class, students build meaningful friendships with fellow incoming freshmen as well as with established Mendenhall Mentors by going on excursions around Houston and activities beyond the classroom.

By the end of July, students will have completed 6 elective credit hours, will have received a head start applying to on-campus jobs, and will be more confident in their abilities to thrive at UST.

Ms. Mendenhall, who founded MSI 15 years ago, gives 30 students in the Institute a $1,000 per semester for up to 8 semesters scholarship. These scholarships are distributed based on need and participation in the program.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: We have found that students who participate in Mendenhall retain at a significantly higher rate than their peers. Our Mendenhallers retain at about a 94% rate and go on to graduate higher than their peers as well. Additionally, our students assume leadership roles more regularly than their peers because of their level of comfort with the institution.

The mental Health Awareness Training CErT program is based on the UHCL Counseling and Mental Health Center's mission, “Connect, Empower, Thrive”. The "Connect, Empower, refer, and Thrive (CErT)", training is a research-based program for UHCL students, faculty, and staff on recognizing signs of mental health issues, connecting to resources, preventing poor mental health outcomes, and ensuring student retention and success. The 2-3-hour training contains modules separately targeting faculty/staff; general students and student leaders; veterans; and students seeking teacher certification. The main learning objectives for this training are for participants to learn to identify emerging signs and symptoms of mental health concerns, be able to distinguish skillful ways to intervene with individuals who are experiencing mental health concerns and make referrals to appropriate services, and be able to identify at least two ways to engage in self-care.

Jarvis Christian University (JCU) Counseling Services is rethinking our approach amid an influx of student mental health demands during the mental health crisis, post the COVID-19 pandemic. Supporting and understanding our students' needs is critical, therefore Counseling Services increased the number of outreach activities and one-on-one counseling sessions with students. In March of 2023, 82% of the students who participated in the Healthy Minds Study stated that students' mental and emotional well-being is a priority on campus.

This initiative aims to harness the effectiveness of evidence-informed interventions to target mood-related concerns. The goal is to provide campus-wide, multi-modal instruction and engagement in mindfulness, stress reduction, emotional intelligence, and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. This initiative consists of interactive video-based instruction, live workshops, curated on-demand campus reflection/relaxation spaces, self-help resources (individual and utilization in academic classes), campus focused MHFA, and an invited expert speaker or panel event. The expanded dissemination of prevention-focused skills training will serve as a buffer against more severe psychological distress and behavioral concerns, allow students to more fully engage in their academic pursuits/interpersonal relationships, as well as assist the participants in better identifying options to assist those experiencing psychological or emotional distress. These interventions are targeted for both the general student population and numerous smaller student populations that benefit from additional support/attention.

All students at ETBU are assigned an academic advisor in their field of study. Students must meet with this faculty member in order to register for classes each semester - students do not register for classes on their own. This process helps our advisors work with students to ensure all degree requirements are met as well as help them plan for future semesters. Owl Access seeks to improve the transition experience of first-generation college students and their families. Our goal is to support first-generation college students by building a network of community members and to encourage the positive self-identification of those who are the first in their families to attend college and/or students from low-income communities. Owl Access will be a 2.5-day college transition program that focuses on providing first-generation and/or low-income new students a head start on college adjustment. The Peer Leaders within Residence Life program provides opportunities for SMU upper-class students to serve in a leadership capacity while acting as liaisons for campus departments. Partnering campus departments include the Office of Wellbeing, Engage Dallas, the Office of General Education, and the Office of the Chaplain & Religious Life. Each residential community primarily serves first and second-year students who are the primary target audience for the peer leader program. There are four peer leaders dedicated to each residential community, a Peer Academic Leader, Engage Dallas Student Director, Spiritual Life Mentor, and a Wellbeing Education Student Team representative. Each peer leader partners with the Residential Community Director and Faculty in Residence to facilitate monthly programs focused on well-being, academic support, spiritual development, and local community service engagement.

The Peer Leader program aims to ensure students are aware of and utilizing on-campus support resources, are connected socially on-campus and to the local Dallas community, and are supported in their transition to college in order to promote holistic wellness that leads to student success and retention.

Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL)

Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) allows student to work in small groups of 8 facilitated by peers who have successfully passed the course. Students in PLTL work on practice problem sets developed by UTA faculty. PLTL sessions are facilitated once a week and attendance is mandatory. After a weekly meeting with faculty, PLTL Leaders will meet with the group throughout the entire semester to help with conceptual content and study skills.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: The PLTL model was successful in decreasing the DFW rate in PLTL supported courses in 21-22. PLTL decreased DFW rates between 4% to 40% across courses. Supported courses are MATH 1426 (Calculus I), MATH 2425 (Calculus II), MATH 2326 (Calculus III), CHEM 1441 (General Chemistry I), CHEM 1442 (General Chemistry II) and CHEM 1465 (Chemistry for Engineers).

Peer Mentors have successfully completed the Learning Frameworks course and now work closely with the First-Year Seminar instructor to provide peer mentoring and instructional support to one section of the Learning Frameworks's first-year and transfer students. Coordinating with an assigned Learning Frameworks faculty member to prepare for each weekly lesson, peer mentors serve as liaisons between students and faculty. Peer mentors are also clearinghouses for student success resources and campus events. They exemplify critical thinking by modeling class assignments, assessing weekly writing assignments, and facilitating small group discussions. During weekly peer mentor-student conversations about academic success tips, co-curricular opportunities, and targeted workshops, they create an atmosphere of trust, responsibility, and encouragement with students.

The First-Year Seminar Peer Mentor Program also benefits peer mentor cohorts. Peer mentors develop leadership skills vital to college and professional success; receive mentorship from faculty supervisors; create a close community within their cohort through shared trainings and experiences; cultivate fairness by engaging in challenging assumptions about cross- and intra-cultural diversity; and participate in professional development opportunities such as presenting at academic conferences, moderating First-Year Seminar events, and networking with campus and community leaders.

Planning for Student Success in Mathematics

Baylor University seeks to build upon its success in mathematics curriculum redesign and mathematics supplemental instruction (SI) to benefit students from underserved populations in calculus. With the help of institutional funds and support from a THECB planning grant, Baylor has already redesigned its Calculus I curriculum (MTH 1321) and scaled up SI for most sections of these courses to good effect. The redesign of MTH 1321 included a 4-hour credit section of the course that includes just-in-time student assistance. Student data drawn from our Navigate student success portal was utilized to invite students from target populations (first-generation and URM) to enroll in these courses. This application seeks support for the continuation of this work and expansion to include MTH 1309: Business Calculus. Baylor seeks funding to support faculty work in the curriculum redesign effort for this additional course as well as funding to provide full SI coverage for all sections.

Power Hours are designed to help students prepare for exams in select courses. Our Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) tutors are trained in leading group study and material review. Power Hours are led by either an ACE tutor or the instructor themselves. "Power Up + Tech Up Program aims to equip students with the power (soft) and technical skills that will empower them to initiate well-paying and rewarding careers. The program features online, self-paced training programs that lead to certifications and industry-recognized credentials in power and technical skills. Students access these programs free of charge through our partnerships with CareerSpots, Revature (a tech talent firm), Google and Coursera.

Power Up + Tech Up aims to provide a co-curricular opportunity for transfer students to gain power skills experience and industry-recognized credentials and articulate these skills as they land their first jobs upon graduation. Objectives of the Power Up + Tech Up Program include increased knowledge and awareness of power skills, an increase in participation in technical skills training and certification programs by the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) students by twenty percent, and an 80% employment rate of Power Up + Tech Up students within the first three months of graduation.

The Power Up + Tech Up Program targets transfer students from UTA’s three largest college partners—Collin College, Dallas College, and Tarrant County College. UTA has excellent relationships with all three colleges and will continue to strengthen the connection through the enhanced services provided to these students participating in the program. Students from all majors will be encouraged to participate. "
