How do you currently use OER in your position?
1. Sarah Straub, Stephen F. Austin State University (Educator Preparation Program)
2. I have not.
3. I believed I understood OER on a basic level. I learned it is so much more complicated than I thought. I am now incredibly nervous about copyright infringment but I am eager to learn more. I do not officially use OER right now.
Hi Sarah,
Good Morning! I sent you some open teacher education resources in the chat last week. Did you receive them?
Suzel
1. Shanna Irwin-Coury, Collin College
2. I haven't really. I've only used things marketed as OER.
3. I am working on creating OER content.
Hi Shanna,
Wonderful to see another Collin College faculty in the group. What subject do you teach?
Hi, Sukanya! Mathematics. You're biology, right?
yes:)
Hi, everyone!
My name is Jessica Zbeida, and I'm an Assoc. Prof. of English at McLennan Community College.
I have taken some faculty professional development courses focused on copyright, and I've discussed it at professional conferences. I haven't completed a CC certification course yet, though, and I'd like to do that in the future.
Our college has an OER textbook for English 1301/1302 that a colleague in my department wrote, and I'd like to consider how to redesign a corequisite English course (what used to be called developmental courses) so it integrates that content. Our goal is to make the corequisite courses more aligned with and supportive of what happens in English 1301, but at present that hasn't worked as well as we would like. Hoping to improve student success and faculty buy-in! :)
Great to meet everyone!
Jessica
Hi Jessica!
A colleague and I here at WTAMU are also working on developing and expanding our first-year composition writing resource. We too are hoping to improve faculty buy-in!
Great to meet you--
Monica
As an English person, I'm really envious of your goals. :) We don't have a shared OER text for developmental English yet where I am -- and I think we really, really need one!
Cheering you on over here!
Hi, Melissa!
I'm hoping we can adapt what we have in OER and supplement it with some of the other resources. Let me know how it goes with your group, though! I'm always eager to share ideas :)
Jessica
What is your name and institution?
Dr. Rachel Sale, South Texas CollegeI have participated on the College OER Committee for the past year. In previous years, I have led instructional design teams to ensure OER development.
How do you currently use OER in your position?
I am working with multiple departments to create OER options. We just purchased a Pressbooks license, although I think our Texas site will prove more valuable.Share
My name is Anna Klyueva, and I teach communication at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. I frequently have to deal with copyright in communication courses. I have never used OER resources before and look forward to learning more and redesigning one of my courses (Intro to Comm Research Methods).
I am at Temple College
I have never dealt with them.
OER is my adotpted platform for this coming semester.
Hi, Wesley. Do you mean you personally adopted OER, or your department or school did?
I have, every professor has different books, there are three other different text i know of
What is your name and institution?
Heather Medley, Instructional Designer at South Plains College
How have you interacted with copyright and licensing before?
some as a part of a team
How do you currently use OER in your position?
I work with faculty and with the librians to find resources and promote the creation of resources for our faculty.
Hello Heather. My married name is Medley. Do you have family in Wisconsin?
My husband is adopted so I'm not sure. I'd love to find out though.
Hi Heather, I'm also an Instructional Designer. I would be interested in hearing more about how your college uses OER.
Hello Jorge,
We have a few departments that have created their own OERs and even master course templates in our LMS. Our administration supports OER by offering stipends for completion. We promote it through Professional Development workshops and integrate it into "off-topic" training as well.
Even through we have made some strides, I feel like we have a long way to go!
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm impressed by the emphasis on OER at your institution. I would love to hear the future advancements of OER at your college.
1. Sukanya Subramanian, Collin College, Texas
2. Yes
3. I am trying to develop an OER lab course for Non-majors biology
Hi, Sukanya!
It's nice to meet you! One of my colleagues, Mary Sides, has done some similar work for non-majors biology at MCC. She's had positive feedback about it, and she's in the group with us this summer. I hope you two are able to connect and share ideas. Mary's super nice (Hi, Mary!).
Best,
Jessica Zbeida
Hi Jessica,
Thank you for the introduction. I would love to connect with Mary.
Hi Sukanya
This is Ravi from South Texas College, McAllen, Texas.
I developed an OER course in Physical Geology and taught it a few times.
Teaching s science course online using OER can be a challenge.

I'm so excited to see someone from my undergrad alma mater here! (Is the Panhandle any cooler than South Texas right now? I hope so!)
Edit: I was so excited, I could not take time to run spellcheck. LOLOL.
1. Dan Brown, Temple College
2. I have not done any of that, Yet.
3. I do not currently use OER, because there is only one resourse I found in OER Commons that is created for Texas Government and it is 7 years old, I am in the process of remixing it for use in my class.
Hi, Dan!
Good to meet you. One of my colleagues, Prof. Felicia Gladden, has done a couple of podcast interviews for Texas Government that you might like to use/adapt. We're both at MCC in Waco. Texas government is unique, and it's interesting to see how to address it since other states aren't doing the same thing.
Thanks!
Jessica
Hi Jessica. Yes, that sounds great I would love to hear them. My email is daniel.brown@templejc.edu

It is good to see that I am not alone here. :)
I am Clayton Heberling, but everyone calls me Chance and I an adjunct faculty at Central Texas College.
This is my first experience working the the field and I am looking to create an OER from the ground up..
I use OER's in teaching ESL/ESOL.
Hello, Chance!
I also use OER in ESOL, specifically Integrated Reading and Writing - I'd love to know what resources you've found helpful or the most useful.
Afternoon Clayton. I would like to know the same as Brittany. We just had a meeting yesterday with one of our English professors and would love to know what resources you use. Same with you too Brittany.

My name is Mary Sides, and I am an Associate Professor of Biology at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas.
I have taken a PD class on copyright. I hope to take the Creative Commons Certificate for Educators course in the future.
I currently use OER materials in my non-majors biology courses.
Hi Mary,
I am curious to find out how the learning resources in the OER compare to those of copywright materials.
Hi Praveena,
It very much depends on the resource. The OpenStax textbooks I have looked at compare quite favorably with publisher materials. They are peer-reviewed textbooks written by instructors at colleges and universities. They also have a mechanism for submitting suggested corrections to the textbooks.
While the textbooks compare favorably with publisher materials, sometimes the quality of ancillary materials can be less than those that are associated with publisher created content. However, some of the publisher created ancillary materials I have seen for materials used in my ag classes are not as good as materials I have seen provided in the past.
I hope this helps. If I can be of further assistance, I will be glad to do so.
Hi Mary,
Jessica mentioned that you have experience with OER biology manuals for non-majors. Would love to connect.
Best
Thanks
1. Johnny Gonzalez - South Texas College - Nursing and Allied Health

1. Quentin Bellard, San Jacinto College
2. Being an instructional designer we have work on copyright on a daily basis to make sure that content used in the courses are in compliance with copyright policies. Licensing not so much.
3. Our institution is heavily involved with OER adoption. We have an initiative in place that has currently saved our students over $32 million dollars since 2019. I also teach online and my course utilizes all OER content.
Hi Quentin, I am always amazed at how innovative San Jac is. I enjoy teaching students transferred from San Jac!
Anna from UHCL
Afternoon Anna. Yes I have discovered that in my short time here at the college. It's good to hear that you are loving teaching the students who transfer from here.
1. My name is Dan Brown and I am a Professor of Government at Temple College.
2. I have not done anything with copyright or licensing before.
3. I currenlty do not use OER in my current role because only the U.S. Government course has an OER, I am working on the Texas Government OER so that I can hopefully transition by Spring 2024.
Hi Dan. I have an Adjuct professor who is looking for OER in Texas Govt. Do you think you could share your resources with me?
Hi Susan. Yes I wiould be glad to share what I have on Texas Government. Please pass my email to the Adjunct: daniel.brown@templejc.edu

Dr. Tracy Spencer, Lamar Institute of Technology
No, I am learning this and it is a bit overwhelming at the moment.
Our department has been 98% OER for the last five years. I do worry if we need to go back and check copyright and licensing for what we have been doing.
Hi Tracy,
I've wondered about the copyright and licensing for what I've used as well. This makes me nervous.
Serena
Hi Tracy, I agree! I am worried that I won't be successful with developing the type of resource they are hoping for.
1. Professor Brittany K. Moore, Collin College - Frisco/Preston Ridge
2. I have basic experience with copyright and licensing, though mostly through training and publications (rather than OER application).

3. I use OER in most of my courses. Some classes require texts, but I try to work with my students on that.
My name is Praveena Dhayanithy and I teach Mathematics at Dallas College.
I have not interacted with copywright and licensing a little bit. While exploring the prospect of authoring learning materials, I had a brief introduction.
I have used OER for College Algebra and Contemporary Mathematics.
Hi, Praveena! I also teach mathematics, just north of you at Collin. I'm working on OER materials for an OER statistics.
Hi Shanna,
An OER in Statistics will be a valuable resource for our students. I plan to work on a "How to Learn" module with specific information on STEM topics.

Hi, everyone!
1.) Melissa Elston -- I'm currently an associate professor of English at Palo Alto College, and I'm on our college's OER team.
2.) Yes! Repeatedly!
3.) I have created two OER textbooks for use in our English program, and collaborated cross-institutionally with some colleagues at UTSA here in San Antonio on a writing handbook last year. As a member of the OER team at PAC, I also provide professional development for others who are trying to integrate OER more fully into their coursework. I'm currently teaching a summerlong PD course that serves as an incubator for new faculty-authored textbooks and similar OER resources.
Happy to be here!
Hi Melissa! I'd love to hear more about the Professional Development and incubator you're working with over the summer!
Isabelle,
Sure! Here's a brief outline of the program. I'm teaching the third course. We have a current cohort of six. (The books listed as "in progress" at the end of the document are the projects folks are working on!)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/19h4kpUTn5rs8oPhhJSiJSecfWmmCXbe4h0GWlmnXaLQ/edit?usp=sharing
Thank you for sharing Melissa!! I love the integration of the table - it makes keeping track of everything clear! Is the third course the advanced tier? If so have you been involved in the other tiers too?
Yes and yes. My colleague Suzel Molina -- who is also in this Advanced Skills course -- has been doing it longer than me, but we've collaborated to offer OER-related professional development at our campus for the past few years. (Just wanted to acknowledge her presence here! :) )
1. Amanda Oswalt, Collin College
2. I have informally reviewed an OER class for accessibility and organization at my institution. In the past, I have also been awarded a grant for exploring OER resources at my institution.
3. Currently, my composition ll course uses OER readings, and I'm looking to transition over my composition l course to do the same.
I am Kimberly Harris -- a Professor of Music at Collin College. I have been working with OER for the past four years trying to move my music courses to fully OER. Because of that, I am aware of the various copyright and licenses. I currently use a variety of OER for my music appreciation courses. I am currently working on currating a resource that will be a "one stop shop" for my course rather than having to have students access different open resources. To that end, my institution has granted me a sabbatical to complete my work, that will then be available to anyone -- especially, though to anyone who teaches MUSI 1306.
I'm excited to see your final product Kimberly!
