UNT/TXST Open Access Symposium
by John Martin 3 months, 3 weeks agoDear Fellows,
I thought some of you might be interested in attending or submitting proposals for the following event that we're hosting in October. Feel free to submit a proposal of any kind or share this with your colleagues.
I'd also love to organize a panel of Fellows to talk about OER efforts in Texas if any of you are interested. Feel free to respond in the chat. If we have enough interested, I'll be happy to coordinate.
We're now seeking proposals for the 2024 Open Access Symposium, taking place via Zoom on Friday, October 25, 2024, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
This year's theme is "Open About Open" and we're looking for presentations, panels, posters, workshops, or roundtables on any aspect of Open Access, including open scholarship and publishing, OER, open pedagogy, open data, policy, scholarly evaluation, or other topics.
We welcome anyone working in the field of Open Access, including educators, librarians, students, administrators, policy-makers, advocates, technologists, or community members.
Please see the Call for Proposals below. Proposals are due by August 31.
This event is hosted by the University of North Texas Libraries and the Texas State University Libraries.

If you have questions, please contact whitney.freeman@unt.edu
John, this is exciting! Thanks so much for sharing. I have an idea for a proposal to co-present with one of my ISKME colleagues. Would that be acceptable, or are you thinking TX-only?
Lea,
We'd love to get your proposal and it doesn't have to be Texas-only, if it's a topic of interest to others in the OER or library world. Please submit it and let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!
John
Right on, John! Many thanks! :)
Hi Lea,
Just checking back to see if you still plan to submit a proposal for a presentation or session at the Symposium. Our Call for Papers will close at the end of this week and we still have room for more presentations!
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions: john.martin@unt.edu

Hi John! Yes, my colleague and I will submit a proposal for a workshop. Be on the lookout for a submission from Hanaa Ziad! She plans to complete the form by Friday. :)
Thank you for the reminder!
Hi John,
I'd be interested in participating on a Fellows panel!
Wonderful--thanks! I'll wait to see how many interested folks we have and then see if we want to coordinate a panel submission.
I'm happy to participate as well depending on the time - I will be in Boston but can hop on a virtual session.
Hey Victoria and Jennifer,
If you're still interested in joining me for a panel, I'll need to submit that by the end of this week. Do either of you have an idea of how we might want to frame that proposal? Just an overview of the program and our work? Personal OERigin stories? A discussion of some of the central themes or issues that we hope to address?
If anyone else would like to join us, I'd love to have one or two more folks on a panel! Just let me know.
John
Hi John,
I like those ideas. Maybe we could start with personal OERigin stories/institutional work that led us to being selected as Founding Fellows, talk about our cohort's work through the lens of capacity building across Texas, and share an overview of the fellowship curriculum. We could also allocate time for Q&A/discussion with attendees.
Victoria
I like these ideas. We could also use our own institutions and OER efforts as illustrations of the different ways this curriculum might address differences in size, scope, resources, etc.? That may prompt questions from anyone coming from different kinds of institutions about how they might apply some of these ideas.
So, Victoria and Jennifer, how does this sound? Feel free to suggest changes or edits.
Session Title: "Envisioning an Open Educational Future: The Texas OER Founding Fellows Program"
Description: This panel will discuss the work of the THECB's 2024 OER Founding Fellows Program from the perspective of three of its participants, each from different institutions of higher education in Texas. We'll talk about the goals and vision of the program, our individual interests in participating, and how we envision this program helping institutions like ours develop more robust, sustainable, and ethical OER support and leadership. We'll share some of our own journeys in higher education and how we came to work specifically with Open Education and OER in our current roles. We'll discuss how the particular needs of our institutions and communities have shaped our approach to OER and what we see as its future on our campuses. We'll also share some of the recent work of the OER Found Fellows in developing a curriculum for developing OER leadership and support in other institutions of higher education in Texas.
Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will learn about the goals and vision of the Texas OER Founding Fellows program and the role it may play in developing OER support and leadership in Texas.
2. Attendees will learn how the specific needs of different types of institutions and learning communities may shape our approaches to OER.
3. Attendees will understand how individual educational journeys may impact our relationship and attitudes towards Open Education and OER.
