Javelina Summer Bridge was a 9-day program aimed at helping students admitted by committee, or who had not passed the TSI in their adjustment to college. We also included First Generation college students. We provided reading/writing, math, and student success strategies, and enhanced their sense of belonging with student engagement activities.

The Pathways Academic Assistance Center's (PAAC) mission is to help students become successful and confident academically by: modeling the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Socratic Tutorial strategies by providing the tools and resources necessary to assume responsibility for their own learning; asking higher-level questions to gain a deeper understanding of their rigorous content through critical thinking and inquiry process; and utilizing Cornell note-taking as a method for mastering information, stressing Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). Our tutors understand that students encounter the learning process with different degrees of strength and comfort; therefore, a collaborative approach guides our practice. Tutors and students engage in one-on-one and/or peer conversations about the subject area while sharing knowledge and granting authority to both the tutor and student. We recognize that differences in proficiency, linguistic and cultural background need to be taken into consideration when helping students to become efficient learners.

Starfish Early Alert

Starfish / Early Alert System allows university faculty, academic advisors, financial aid counselors, social work interns, professional counselors (mental health), dean of students, and the registrar to communicate with a student and share notes between departments in an effort to support the success and well-being of a student. Faculty are able to raise flags of academic or non-academic concern to alert of the possibility of failing a course or to request for additional support when they believe a students is facing financial difficulties, mental health issues, food insecurities, homelessness or other factors that may be negatively impacting the students academic success. Academic advisors are are able to see the early alerts and take action by setting up an appointment with the student to discuss their situation. The Starfish administrator is also able to direct any flags of non-academic concern to student support services and request assistance in addressing the students situation. Starfish / Early Alert System is primarily used to help with the retention of first time in college students but it is open to the general student body. Faculty are able to raise flags for undergraduate and graduate students.

The Student Success Mentoring program is designed to support all students in making a successful and enjoyable transition to the TAMUK campus by creating educational and supportive relationships designed to direct students to be successful. The Mentors support students by sharing skills and positive habits, guiding students to resources and opportunities on campus, and promoting positive decision making. Javelinas have the opportunity to meet with a mentor in one-to-one and small group sessions. Student Success Mentors strive to promote academic excellence and student success at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and guide students on their journey from first-year Javelinas to Javelinas for Life. The program’s goals are to support the transition process of all students to A&M Kingsville; increase the student's connection with the university; provide informal academic, career/professional and personal guidance; and connect Javelinas with campus resources.

The Texas A&M University-Kingsville University Success course prepares first-year students to succeed academically and professionally. The course brings students together in a unified learning community that not only facilitates their transition into college, but gives them the tools necessary to work efficiently toward graduation and on to their chosen career path. It utilizes active learning strategies to train the students how to organize and recall crucial information, apply that knowledge toward success in the classroom, and grow into engaged citizens who are capable of achieving significant long-term goals.

The curriculum targets topics such as: Degree Planning, Time Management, Formal Academic Writing, Group Projects, Financial Literacy, and Utilizing Campus Resources.

We offer free writing support to TAMUK students, faculty, and staff. Accomplished graduate and undergraduate students make up our staff of dedicated tutors. We work with writers through all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and organizing to revising and polishing. While face-to-face, in-person appointments are the ideal way to experience our services, students (especially distance learners) can also make online appointments.

At the University Writing Center (UWC), we believe writing is more than just a tool. It is a skill every citizen needs, and a craft every student should hone. Our challenge as peer Writing Consultants is to collaboratively assist fellow writers in all stages of the writing process, from generating ideas to editing and proofreading. We meet each writer where she or he is, with respect for individual learning styles. We share with fellow writers the tools necessary to improve her or his writing process, while fostering interactions between peer learners that benefit both the writer and the writing consultant. At the UWC, everyone is a valued colleague in our culture of writing.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: Since 2015 we've interacted with about 28,800 students via writing tutorials, classroom visits, and writing workshops.
