Calculus Success is a multi-pronged initiative to support students who are underprepared or otherwise identified as at risk for not passing their required calculus courses. There are four programs in this initiative:
1. Dedicated sections of first-semester calculus for students who do not demonstrate calculus-readiness, supported by undergraduate TAs, with a focus on collaborative learning using the Treisman Model
2. A paired-course model in which students take their first semester calculus course paired with a Signature Course (first-year seminar) course on critical thinking
3. Fall Reset - a program that identifies students who are not performing well in their first-year calculus course and offers them the opportunity to switch to a specially developed pre-calculus section for the remainder of the semester
4. Calculus corequisites - modeled after developmental education corequisites, students who do not demonstrate calculus-readiness are required, and students with other risk factors are invited, to enroll in a 1-hour credit support course for the first half of the semester. The focus of the course is peer-to-peer learning, community building, study skills, and content work.

Fearless Leadership Institute

The Fearless Leadership Institute (FLI), established at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013, is a holistic development initiative for Black and LatinX college women at UT-Austin, focusing on three core development areas: academic, personal, and professional development. The initiative provides services and hosts events that promote student engagement, sense of belonging, leadership development, and equips participants with the tools necessary for succeeding at the university and beyond. Participants can take advantage of weekly interest groups, exposure trips to Wall Street and Silicon Valley, international study abroad opportunities, graduate school preparation and mentorship from an upperclassmen, graduate students or professional women from the community. Part of FLI’s strategic plan includes extending programming and support to high school students. For the past two years, FLI has hosted a leadership conference for female high school students from around the state of Texas. To further impact high school students FLI will partner with She Needs To Know (SNTK), a local non-profit, to offer group and individual mentorship with the goal of impacting the postsecondary success for the high school participants of SNTK.

First-Gen Longhorn is a term at the University of Texas that describes any student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) do not have a four-year degree or higher from an institution of higher learning in the United States. In the fall of 2021, first-generation college students at UT Austin accounted for 23% of the undergraduate student body. The mission of the First-Gen Equity program is to create a community on campus for first-generation students by providing them with a multi-tiered support network and an immersive layering of academic, social and professional experiences, workshops, resources, and events. First-Generation students at The University of Texas at Austin are able to opt-in to any of the following whole-person developmental services provided by First-Gen Equity, free of charge:
-Academic Coaching
-Free STEM Tutoring and Free Printing
-Transition & Success Coaching (mentorship program)
-Monthly First-Gen Social Connection, Future-Planning & Skill-building Events

The First-Generation Living Learning Community provides an inclusive and engaging living environment for new Longhorns, who identify as first-generation (first-gen) college students.This community is designed to build a support system among first-gen students, in addition to celebrating each student’s background and successes. Our goals are to: 1) build a community among first-generation students and celebrate student’s background and successes; 2) connect students with first-generation role models through peer and staff mentoring; 3) increase student’s understanding of personal first-generation identity; and 4) increase sense of belonging on UT’s campus.

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: In the 2021-22 academic year, 95% of students met with their mentor at least once a semester, and 33% of students met with their mentor 3 or more times. When surveyed, 82% of students reported that the LLC helped them to connect with other first-gen students and 69% said it helped them understand how they belong at UT.

Our award winning global programs provide students with access to affordable education abroad opportunities in Cape Town, SA; Beijing, China; Mexico City, Mexico; and Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE. Over 80% of our students identify as Black (55%) and Latino (25%), thus creating an opportunity to engage international learning with other students of color in some of the most rapidly changing cities in the world.

The Sanger Learning Center is the academic support hub for all UT-Austin undergraduate students. Our goals include:

- Help students become effective learners.
- Promote help-seeking behavior.
- Provide professional development opportunities that prepare students for lives beyond the university.

Our services include appointment and drop-in tutoring across 70+ traditionally challenging courses. The center also offers Peer Academic Coaching for academic skills enhancement and Supplemental Instruction for challenging courses with peer-led study sessions. Additionally, the Public Speaking Center assists in speech development and delivery, and we offer Mathematics refreshers for calculus students. The Workshops and Outreach team conducts interactive workshops on various skills, including reading and studying effectively, time management, GRE preparation, and many more. Learning Specialists assist students in identifying academic needs and providing necessary resources. Finally, the center offers MCAT coaching for low-income and underserved student populations.

Student Well-being: Removing Barriers and Increasing Capacity Among Campus Stakeholders

The goal of this initiative is two-fold: First, to remove economic barriers for students to improve their mental well-being. This will be accomplished by providing technology to students who otherwise might not be able to afford it. This technology will exist in a student space accessible to students who are already served by two of our campus-wide success programs.

Secondly, this initiative will engage staff - with a particular focus on advisors - in training and discussion groups focused on creating equitable and inclusive organizations. The purpose of this is to increase a sense of belonging low-income and students of color experience on our campus.

UT Success Programs (UTSP)

UT Success Programs (UTSP) are housed in our individual schools and colleges and provide students with a home on campus and a network of support. The University of Texas at Austin has success programs in each of our undergraduate schools and colleges, with the exception of the Jackson School of Geosciences and School of Information. UTSP provide academic, social, and development support to students throughout their first year and in some cases throughout their first two years. Each program provides an academic learning community that includes peer mentoring, group and individualized advising, learning skills training, tutoring, and peer-to-peer teaching. These academically focused success programs are distinct, reflecting the particular environment and pedagogy of their associated colleges and student populations.

EVALUATION STATUS: Data related to program outcomes are currently being internally collected

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: Since 2013, the number of students served in a success program each year increased from 870 to over 2,200 – over an 200% increase. Four-year graduation rates for those schools with an active academic success program increased approximately 9.2%. Newer programs who do not yet have 4-year graduation rates, achieved an average first-year retention rate of 96.6%, an average increase of over 1.3% percentage points. Most notable are the improvements in closing the 4-year graduation rates for Students of Color and for Pell-Eligible students. Since 2013 these two populations’ four-year graduation rates have improved by approximately 16% percentage points.

UT for Me – Powered by Dell Scholars ensures all Longhorns have access to the tools and resources needed for a successful college career. UT for Me is a partnership between the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and UT Austin. Established in January 2020, UT for Me seeks to close the gap in college graduation rates across income levels and raise six-year graduation rates for Pell-eligible students at UT Austin from 73% to 90%. UT for Me provides Pell-eligible Longhorns personalized, multi-faceted support throughout their time at The University of Texas at Austin, helping them stay on track toward their degrees and graduate ready to change the world. To support their success, each UT for Me student receives a laptop, annual textbook credits, and exclusive access to a dedicated advising team. The UT for Me staff is here to support each student’s individual needs and offer connections to university resources and programming. In addition to the benefits and services provided by UT for Me, incoming Pell-eligible freshmen from families with the greatest need become part of Dell Scholars at UT Austin and receive a financial award of up to $20,000.

PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES DATA: Our first cohort (FTIC entering in fall 2020) achieved a first-year retention rate of 95.1%. We also created the first early leavers campaign at UT Austin to help students who have left return to campus, and will be welcoming 37 students back this fall. We celebrated our first graduates (6 students) in 2021-2022, all of whom graduated at least two years early.

University Leadership Network

The University Leadership Network is a data-driven research-informed strategic program within the departments of Undergraduate Equity and Excellence that utilizes a holistic approach to serving students. Based on the core functions of building community, developing leadership skills, career readiness via experiential learning and financial literacy. ULN sets ambitious goals for its students and helps prepare them for life beyond graduation.

Over the course of four years, students earn incentive-based awards up to $20,000 ($5,000/yr) by completing programmatic milestones like maintaining full-time enrollment status, participating in experiential learning opportunities and leadership/professional development curriculum. Incentive-based awards have two main goals: to provide students with additional financial support to reduce financial need and to provide incentives for academic progress. The University Leadership Network selects 350 to 400 high-achieving students each academic year to participate in the program. Selection is based on FAFSA documentation utilizing the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC).

Analyses of the efficacy of ULN shows that participation in ULN significantly improves retention and graduation rates. These outcomes demonstrate how ULN is an innovative and effective intervention for postsecondary student success. Over the past 9 years, ULN continuously achieved positive outcomes as a result of the intentional programming and personalized support offered by staff members.
