The Academic Readiness Center helps Frank Phillips College students to be successful in pursuing their academic goals. To accomplish this, we offer a wide variety of services: tutoring, free printing, access to computer lab resources, technological help, supplemental instruction, and some proctoring services.

Amarillo College's Advocacy & Resource Center (ARC) was established to provide students with a centralized location to access resources that can assist in meeting students' basic needs. Social Workers are available to work with Amarillo College staff, faculty and community members to assist in removing barriers that prevent students from obtaining success. Through the ARC, students can access the Social Services Program which provides access to internal and external resources to ensure that student's needs are addressed appropriately. Emergency Aid is also available to students who meet the qualification requirements of the college's No Excuses Fund. Students are also able to inquire about scholarships that can help them meet their academic, childcare, and transportation needs. Last but not least, Amarillo College students are able to visit one of five campus food pantries that not only provides access to food but hygiene and baby resources as well.

Best Achievement Strategies for College (BASC) is a system-wide, university orientation course created to encourage traditional and non-traditional students to persist to degree completion. The class focuses on three elements: the development of a growth mindset, the early identification of a major and career, and the hands-on involvement in service learning. BASC is offered face-to-face on the residential campus, each external campus and online, each with a slightly different student population. The course is designed to assist and empower first-year learners with strategies and information to support the successful launch of their college career. Faculty from each academic school on the Plainview campus offer discipline-specific sections of the course, allowing students to make connections with faculty in their primary area of study while receiving information and success strategies specific to that major and profession. Throughout the semester, students learn about growth mindset, and receive information about student services, the writing center, the library, tutoring, and health and wellness, as well as strategies such as time and financial management, study skills, note taking, and learning styles. Students explore their interests, skills, and career goals upon choosing a major and are assisted one-on-one with registering for classes for their second semester. Members of the BASC course also participate in a service-learning project that ties discipline-specific activities to community service. The Best Academic Strategies for College (BASC) course is designed to make the transition to college a little less stressful by making information, strategies, and services readily available.

The First Year Institute Seminar’s goal is to teach students “how to be a college student.” We examine factors that underlie learning, success, and personal development in higher education. Topics covered include information processing, memory, strategic learning, self-regulation, goal setting, motivation, educational and career planning, and learning styles. Techniques of study such as time management, listening and note taking, text marking, library, 0and research skills, preparing for examinations, and utilizing learning resources are covered. Includes courses in college orientation and developments of students’ academic skills that apply to all disciplines. All first semester freshmen must enroll in the course during their first semester of college. A final grade of C or higher is required, or the student must repeat the course. Our Learning Framework Capstone is meant to prepare students for transfer and or the workforce. This course includes 1) research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition, and motivation; 2) factors that impact learning; and 3) application of learning strategies. Theoretical models of strategic learning, cognition, and motivation serve as the conceptual basis for the introduction of college-level student academic strategies. Students use assessment instruments (e.g., learning inventories) to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses as strategic learners. Students are ultimately expected to integrate and apply the learning skills discussed across their own academic programs and become effective and efficient learners. Students developing these skills should be able to draw continually from the theoretical models they have learned. (Cross listed as PSYC 1100). (NOTE: While traditional study skills courses include some of the same learning strategies, e.g., note-taking, reading, test preparation as learning framework courses, the focus of study skills courses is solely or primarily on skill acquisition. Study skills courses, which are not under-girded by scholarly models of the learning process, are not considered college-level and therefore are distinguishable from Learning Framework courses.) They will also gain a built-in community through an attached Learning Community Group (LCG), led by two upper-classmen. These peer mentors guide their students though the first semester adjustment period and integrating them into the Honors and Texas Tech communities.

RaiderReady offers four one-credit courses meant to help students transition and maintain success throughout college years and beyond. Our main course, RRP 1100 First Year Seminar, is designed to help students successfully manage the transition from high school to Texas Tech. RRP 1100 serves to acclimate, prepare, and guide students as they begin their academic journey at Texas Tech. For over two decades, the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program at Frank Phillips College (FPC) has promoted student success by helping students to overcome the barriers that might otherwise prevent them from achieving their goals. This federally-funded Title IV program serves 165 students annually who are first generation, low-income (as defined by federal income standards), and/or are students with a documented disability or impairment. The primary goal of the TRiO SSS program is to give our students every possible tool to express their full potential here at FPC and beyond. We offer a variety of services aimed at increasing students' chances of success, including (but not limited to) academic advising, tutoring, financial literacy education, assistance in filing for scholarships and financial aid, peer mentoring, career and transfer assistance, and grant aid for qualifying students.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: The Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) program offers Day 1 paid research to any Honors undergraduate student -- from all majors -- by partnering students with research-active faculty at the TTU and TTUHSC campuses. Honors students can follow their passions, delve more deeply into their field, or try a new academic pursuit through a formal mentoring relationship with faculty. URS is a two-semester (or longer) commitment. The program begins September 1 and culminates in the spring with a mandatory presentation in the TTU Undergraduate Research Conference.

The Division of Student Affairs is utilizing Implementation Grant to employ a redesign of how learning and engagement opportunities for
students are achieved. The redesign is modeled on the Curricular Approach to Student Affairs work. A curricular approach is an increasingly popular method of organizing out-of-classroom learning and engagement experiences for college students. The approach entails the development of learning objectives and then sequencing and scaffolding designed learning experiences to achieve these objectives. Through this focus on student learning and throughout the design process, formative and summative assessment measures are more easily identified, designed, and analyzed to allow for overall
curriculum review, improvement, and advancement. With the assistance of the ASSI Planning Grant, the planning work has already begun and we are excited to develop and launch the curriculum at West Texas A&M
