Prompt: Please share the following:
- If you could have three wishes granted for this project, what would they be?
- If you could design a sidekick for this project, what would be their superpower?
- What do you know now that you didn't know a week ago that you feel will really help your project be successful?
1. If you could have three wishes granted for this project, what would they be?
i. Examples to make sure we are delivering the product in the correct manner
ii. Collaboration with others in a similar discipline
iii. More hands on training time
2. If you could design a sidekick for this project, what would be their superpower?
My sidekick would have the superpower to search, sort and find appropriate resources with lightning speed!
3. What do you know now that you didn't know a week ago that you feel will really help your project be successful?
I think the knowledge I gained about licensing and remixing will be very helpful.
Jorge, I agree. I would LOVE to see a finished example. And, I would love explicit instructions for how to search for the OER resources.
1. I agree with everyone's wishes so apologies if I am being repetitive.
2. My superpower for my sidekick would be to do the research for the subject matter to be remixed.
3. The information about licensing.
Three wishes:
1. More materials in the OER repository in my teaching area (literature, specifically British literature) that I could learn from and possibly remix.
2. A user guide that walks me through the steps of completing the template and includes examples of completed templates.
3. A hands-on workshop session where we all work on our projects and have someone available to answer questions. Office hours will help with that, I'm sure, but I have a conflict for the office hours time :(
Sidekick:
Not sure . . .
What I Know Now:
The differences between the licensing options, or at least *more about* the differences between the licenses
I agree... office hours I think is the place for that individualized support, but I missed the hours if they were communicated before this day and my calendar is already full for next week, lol.
Hi, Monica!
This is Jessica (Zbeida), and I also teach British Literature. Right now, I'm looking for OER materials related to my Early American Literature course, too. I agree about the need for more materials focused on literature, though. I found one OER textbook that's on Composition and Responding to literature that had a few good exercises on analysis and responding to literature (mostly, Shakespeare's sonnets or sections of a play). The analysis is okay, but I agree with you about the desire for better literature OER resources. To me, the hard part is all the ancillaries, like maps! I use maps from Norton anthologies so much, and I haven't found a good option to replace that in OER texts so far.
Thanks for sharing! I hope your project goes well! I have a colleague (Yolanda Gonzalez) who teaches Brit Lit online, and she's working on adopting OER, too. Let me know if you'd like her contact info, though. She's awesome!
Best,
Jessica
My three wishes would be to have an AI sidekick that could find the resources for me so I could focus on the design, be able to implement it and get feedback BEFORE the July deadline, and learn how to (or if I am able to) share this resource for implementation outside of this platform.
Their superpower would be to develop high quality podcasts.
I learned about Perusall and I think that is an INCREDIBLE resource.
I second that about Perusall! I'm putting together a class in it right now just to learn how it works. Looks like sooooo much potential.
Monica
Yes, I too, learned that.
Hi Sarah,
I agree with you about Perusall! It is amazing.
Ciao,
Kimberly
I am very excited to learn more about Perusall!
1. First, money to support my project. Second, a collaborator to help. Third, a person or persons in my discipline to go over and give me feedback on what I've created.
2. Copyright and licensing knowledge! Able to tell me what each abbreviation stands for and means whenever I need it. I guess a cheat sheet would work, too ;)
3. I learned that there is a real possibility of grants to help fund these projects that I'm already planning on doing/working on.
Hi Amanda,
I hear you with funding. Our university has been having conversations about what is appropriate compensation and, at this moment, it seems that no compensation is considered appropriate.
So, it comes down to if we have the interest in doing this without financial support.
C'est la vie!
Sarah
Hi Sarah and Amanda,
My institution is much the same as what Sarah describes. Push to develop OER, but funding is not part of the discussion. We have great librarians who are working on OER, and fantastic instructional designers who I know would help faculty, but they are all stretched so thin as it is without taking on making hands-on roles in specific OER endeavors. Definitely feels like a solo effort for me.
But here's hoping for positive change!
Take care,
Monica
HI Amanda,
I agree. I learnt a lot about copywright and the game helped me remember the different abbreviations. I would like to explore more funding opportunities to develop my full OER project.
Amanda,
That third wish is so important. My collaborator and I here at my school are trying to figure out how to create a peer-review process or mechanism so that faculty have a bit more of that security/community review/feedback when creating OER, the same way they would if they were creating materials through a traditional publisher. If we come up with something that works and is replicable, I don't mind sharing the plans/budget with you later on!
Hi Soma, I agree with those three examples you stated. It would be great to see a finished example, Sorry to hear you missed the previous session. I also had to miss the first session due to scheduling conflicts.
1. My three wishes would be for more time to work on this project (I'm teaching 4 classes ATM), funding so that I can complete the entire textbook, and peers in this discipline to get feedback from.
2. My sidekick would have Licensing knowledge.
3. I liked the Perusall program, but beside that I feel I have an understanding of how this OER creation and Remixing is supposed to be done.
FOUR classes? For summer I? Holy crap! What discipline? Are they all online?
I am teaching Government at Temple College and Intro to Political Science at UMGC, all online.
Hi, everyone!
Here are my responses:
1). If I had a magical being to grant my wishes (watch Three Thousand Years of Longing if you haven't, btw), I would ask for: (a) students to give me feedback and answer questions as I did the course redesign; (b) better metadata and comments about OER resources in platforms online--I see how this really makes it easier to make choices; and, (c) more confidence navigating copyright (ha!).
2). My sidekick for this project is probably an actual person working in my department (her name is Yolanda Gonzalez, and she's awesome). Her superpowers are tenacity and clarity. She sticks with tasks and follows through, and she can express her ideas, goals, and questions concisely. She's the person you want to make an agenda for a committee meeting.
3). I know more about the accessibility checker in OER TX, which is great! It's really useful, and I'm excited to play around with it as I develop my syllabus and other materials.
Thanks, everyone! I do feel like having time to talk and share in discussion yesterday helped me feel more confident and optimistic about the project and the process. Yay for that!
Jessica
Ravinda I definitely agree with your step-by-step guide with screenshots, as well as having a sidekick that can identify any issues (and forsee any potential issues) and automatically resolve them.
1. 3 wishes- funded now before I do the work, understanding licensing more- if an OER creator charges other bigger groups to use their work, a copyright checker
2. copyright checking
3. ND and how to verify if a resource is this
Hi Xyanthine,
A copyright checker would be awesome! In history, I see so much revision of information- it's hard to know where to start to find the original copyright owner!
Best of luck!
Lisa
1. Already existing ppt slides or word doc of notes for the text, exam files that had multiple versions of each problem (basically randomizing variables), and a good and reliable free TI84 simulator that all students could get/access regardless of device ownership.
2. MyOpenMath expertise that would allow them to easily design the aforementioned test banks.
3. Differences in copyright.
1) I wish we had more time between sessions; I could see someone work on the project; I knew about this opportunity sooner.
2) An on-demand podcast/ webinar with complete examples of a course remix with points on why and how would be very helpful.
3) Perusall and licensing conversations were very helpful.
I agree with all three of your points, especially more time to devote to this project.
I really like your idea Irina about an on-demand podcast. That would really be beneficial to have access to that and refer to examples being displayed. I provide examples of projects in my class and that appreciate that very much so that same principal would apply here with these projects.
1. If you could have three wishes granted for this project, what would they be?
2. If you could design a sidekick for this project, what would be their superpower?
3. What do you know now that you didn't know a week ago that you feel will really help your project be successful?
1. Three wishes:
A. Step by step guide
B. Examples
C. Collaboration and hands-on training
2. My sidekick's superpower would be locating and remixing resources
3. Licensing and remixing
I would like to see examples of the tasks we are being asked to complete. Sometimes when learning new skills, its hard to wrap my head around what is being expected.
My sidekick would be an expert in what the icons mean.
I now know what remixing is at a deeper level; it still needs some clarification but I am feeling more confident.
I understand where you were coming from Cailyn in terms of the remixing. Without attending the office hours earlier this week I would have received that deeper understanding of it as you stated. Since then I have worked on the project seeing the big picture.
A thorough knowledge of how all the pieces can work together in the LMS
How to locate materials using the tagging feature
- A really smart/motivated graduate assistant to help. (Ha! My institution doesn't have graduate assistants.)
- Better "handoff" when sharing internally with other instructors who teach the same subject.
- Some dedicated time during Fall Convocation to share out/present to relevant faculty.
The ability to stop time, so we could spend hours and hours looking at resources before this is due. :)
My schedule for the upcoming three semesters is a lot less "up in the air," and I know I'll be teaching the relevant classes for some time to come. That makes me feel confident that I can user-test the materials a few times in a real class scenario.
*A walk through of what this project looks like as it is completed and submitted.
*A bit more detailed discussion on the hows and whys. I think there is an assumption that everyone has a solid background in OER and that isn't accurate.
*A bit more clarity on what is actually due.
Serena - I LOVE that you already have a sidekick. I want to hear more about this!!!
I think Leanne addressed this as I have been fighting with the internet gods... who are winning. :(
Hi Serena,
I'm in full agreement on all your items. I'm coming into this with zero knowledge of OER, but I'm excited about all the possibilities. As a cybersecurity engineer by nature, we reuse a lot of code so looking forward to seeing everything that is out there. I'm hoping that the project in-flight shared today help with my direction.
1. If you could have three wishes granted for this project, what would they be?
I would wish for a little more hands-on training with regard to remixing content, a little more detail regarding the submitting the project, and the ability to create engaging and relevant lab exercises for online non-majors biology II.
2. If you could design a sidekick for this project, what would be their superpower?
My sidekick's superpower would be the ability to create really good case study lab exercises for non-majors biology.
3. What do you know now that you didn't know a week ago that you feel will really help your project be successful?
I don't know that Perusall will really be helpful on this particular project, but I am intrigued enough to check into it further for possible use in the future.
Hi Mary,
I didn't know perusall was great too, glad to know someone is thinking the same!
-Stacy
I do not have content to provide for the first two prompts, but I feel more comfortable with the varying licensing.
More time as I'm on vacation and just made Chair of my department.
See first answer, still catching up on OER.
My project helps my college and my students.
Able to see the future to ensure a good outcome
I jumpted into this without the intro OER class (didn't realize the full scope) but I'm truly glad I did as this is a great resource. I'm excited to get ramped up and have a good project.
My three wishes are: more time in the day, a partner for the project, and more resources in my area. My sidekick's superpower would be searching and sorting powers. I learned how to search the OER.
Three wishes: 1) Automatic feedback on whether or not I am including attributions properly. 2) More examples of syllabi in my subject. 3) I would love reassurance that I am on the right track.
Sidekick: My sidekick would have the ability to make things "pretty."
KWL: I need an accountability partner.
I need ana ccountability partner as well as I feel working in a team is more effective.
Response: Thank you for the opportunity to offer my thoughts on this initiative. My responses to the prompts are as follows:
1. If I could have three wishes for this project, they would be:
a. Greater awareness and adoption: My first desire is for Open Educational Resources (OER) to be widely known and adopted. More educators and students will become aware of the benefits of OER and actively incorporate them into their teaching and learning activities. This would result in more access to high-quality instructional materials for all students, regardless of socioeconomic conditions.
b. Collaboration and community: My second aim is for a strong collaborative community to grow around this project. . I'd like to see educators, content creators, and students collaborate to submit, review, and improve open educational resources. Building a supportive and involved community would ensure the project's long-term viability and constant improvement.
c. Long-term funding and support: My third hope is long-term funding and support for OER projects. Financial sustainability is a common issue for OER efforts, which can stymie their growth and influence. I hope policymakers, institutions, and philanthropic organizations recognize the importance of OER and offer the necessary financing and support to ensure the long-term viability of these programs. This would allow for the continuous development and upkeep of high-quality OER resources.
2. If I could create a sidekick for this project, their superpower would be the capacity to adapt OER content into multiple languages smoothly. Language limitations are a significant impediment to accessing educational resources for learners worldwide. We could break down these obstacles and make OER resources available in multiple languages if we had a translator on our team. This will dramatically expand the project's worldwide reach and influence, allowing learners from many linguistic backgrounds to benefit from OER.
3. What I know now that I didn't know a week ago that will help the project succeed:
I'm learning about effective ways for encouraging OER use at educational institutions. Understanding the process and experiences of colleagues on the platform have provided insights I would not have otherwise gained. With this information, I am better prepared to face the problems of implementing OER programs. I now have a better awareness of the potential obstacles and techniques for overcoming them. This newfound understanding will surely help to the success of our project by allowing me to design effective advocacy and implementation strategies that correspond with the requirements and priorities of our institution.
Hi Clayton,
Two of your wishes were mine as well, but I also agree with your first wish that more faculty would be willing to adopt OER for their courses. Additionally, I'm thinking of developing some workshop presentations within my field to make them more aware of OER and the opportunities available for us to be more collaborative across the state.
I think it is a matter of increasing academics awareness of the availability of OERs. I have to admit that when I first became an adjunct I was not aware of their existence. I am guessing it is common lack of knowledge. There are a couple of things we could do such as:
I think my three wishes are more focused on having more examples of OER to draw from in the areas I am looking into - there seem to be avariety of textbooks, but fewer syllabi or exampls of assignments. Regardless I am excited to develop material as I go!
I think my sidekick would be have a second brain superpower - so we could work in conjunction and expediate the project!
I know more about how the ingherent platform remixing works - which is super cool and useful for keeping everything in one place ( i love knowledge management and wish all the open systems talked to each other a smidge better!)
1. My first wish would be that have an AI robot sitting next to me to complete my project; my second wish would be that I have grant funds to use for this project; and last, that AI would be able to provide more training for me. At the same time, I understand and search for resources using the OER database.
2. My sidekick is my AI, and their superpower is limitless (Matrix)
3. What I know now is how to look for resources using the various options that advanced skills provide search option provides.
1. If you could have three wishes granted for this project, what would they be?
1a: This project is appreciated by each participating campus and the next cohort comes in even more prepared.
1b. My own campus needs to start a hub to highlight out current works.
1c. A similar cohort for administrators such as academic deans to learn about the eithcal use such as attributions.
2. If you could design a sidekick for this project, what would be their superpower?
Super Communicator because any other problem can be fixed if a team communicates well.
3, What do you know now that you didn't know a week ago that you feel will really help your project be successful?
The critical need to provide full attribution for all OER content. I knew we needed cititations, but did not think about images that are open source.
You are right, Andres! Students enjoying learning activities is a key to success.
1. My first wish would be to find adequate funding for this OER project. Second, my wish would be to foster a collaborative and engaged community around this OER project. Third, my wish is to design the project in a way that allows it to be continuously maintained, updated, and improved over time.
2. If I could design a sidekick for this project, this person would possess adaptive intelligence, which allows him/her to understand the learning needs and preferences of individual learners. S/he would have the ability to analyze user data, track progress, and dynamically adjust the content and presentation to match the learner's pace, style, and level of understanding. This superpower would enable personalized learning experiences, making the OER project more effective and engaging for each learner.
3. I appreciated the repeat of the licensing information so I can ensure that everything I use is licensed properly, as well as a better understanding of which template to use for my project.
My three wishes for the project are:
1. More details about OER images.
2. Have a review process to receive feedback and revide based on feedback.
3. More courses in this format to develop and better our OER skills.
A sidekick for me would be an expert in Learning Styles who would work with me to create a checklist for students to understand their learning style so they know the best way to learn Mathematics effectively.
I now feel much more confident about my OER skills.
1. Three wishes: more time in the day; develop a strong vision for the end product; find a few people at my institution on board with oer
2. The Encourager ..........with a cape!!
3. Better understanding of templates.
1) Content that I could remix versus creating from scratch.
2) Editing for publishing. The tools online are lacking.
3) I need to dive into creating a new textbook vs remixing as I had hoped.
