This is a course in industrial organization, the study of firms in markets. Industrial organization focuses on firm behavior in imperfectly competitive markets, which appear to be far more common than the perfectly competitive markets that were the focus of your basic microeconomics course. This field analyzes the acquisition and use of market power firms, strategic interactions among firms, and the role of government competition policy. We will approach this subject from both theoretical and applied perspectives.

Inferential Statistics and Probability - A Holistic Approach
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

The book aims to provide a more holistic approach to supplement traditional statistics textbooks. It includes deriving hypotheses from research questions, explaining statistical power and Type II error more in-depth, emphasizing conceptual understanding over calculations, using software for computations, adding interactive animations, and providing Excel data sets. Preliminary student results showed increased engagement and comprehension of hypothesis testing logic after incorporating a holistic approach.

The book is published under a Creative Commons license to make it freely available to students, as the author believes in open sharing of educational resources. The introduction references stories about drug research failures to illustrate Type I and Type II errors and includes a poem about blind men feeling different elephant parts to represent flaws in reductionist-only research. Overall, the book seeks to bring a more holistic perspective to the traditionally reductionist inferential statistics curriculum.

In this video, we take a slightly different approach to determining comparative advantage because we are given data in a slightly different way. Rather than knowing how much of two goods can be produced in a day, we know how much of a resources (in this case labor) is needed to produce one unit of a good.

These are new assessment tools where students can work to demonstrate their mastery of the concepts and component skills in the course. The practice versions help them develop mastery, in preparation for the quiz versions which serve as summative assessments.

The tools are highly randomized so that each student gets a different (but comparable) experience on each iteration. It discourages cheating because each student gets a different variation on each attempt - it's not possible to simply take a screenshot and share the answers with classmates.

Introduction to Ethics: An Open Educational Resource

Rating
0.0 stars

This Introduction to Ethics textbook was developed as an Open Textbook (OER, Open Educational Resource) for use in a lower-level Philosophy course at Golden West College (a California Community College) as part of a sabbatical project in Spring 2019. This work is effectively an anthology of contemporary moral issues and classic ethical theory, in the vein of Rachels' "The Right Thing to Do" or Cahn's "Exploring Ethics". Many of the articles were crowdsourced from talented philosophers and the rest are classic historical readings in the public domain. It is released under a CC-BY license, which means all of the works within it contain licenses that allow them to be used and distributed freely and openly and may be printed (even for commercial purposes).

Rating
0.0 stars

This text, originally by D. Annand and H. Dauderis, is intended for a first course in introductory financial accounting. It has been extensively edited by Athabasca University and reflects current International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). A corporate approach is utilized versus beginning with a sole proprietorship emphasis and then converting to a corporate approach.

The text focuses on core introductory financial accounting topics that match pre-requisite requirements for students advancing to Intermediate Financial Accounting. Excluded are advanced topics that are covered in Intermediate Financial Accounting, such as leases and bond amortization.

The text covers all essential topics, including: the accounting cycle; merchandising; assigning costs to inventory; cash and receivables; property, plant and equipment; debt financing; equity financing; statement of cash flows; financial statement analysis; and proprietorships and partnerships.

Lyryx develops and supports open texts, with editorial services to adapt the text for each particular course. In addition, Lyryx provides content-specific formative online assessment, a wide variety of supplements, and in-house support available 7 days/week for both students and instructors.

An Introduction to Philosophy

The goal of this text is to present philosophy to newcomers as a living discipline with historical roots. While a few early chapters are historically organized, my goal in the historical chapters is to trace a developmental progression of thought that introduces basic philosophical methods and frames issues that remain relevant today. Later chapters are topically organized. These include philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, areas where philosophy has shown dramatic recent progress. This text concludes with four chapters on ethics, broadly construed. I cover traditional theories of right action in the third of these. Students are first invited first to think about what is good for themselves and their relationships in a chapter of love and happiness. Next a few meta-ethical issues are considered; namely, whether they are moral truths and if so what makes them so. The end of the ethics sequence addresses social justice, what it is for one’s community to be good. Our sphere of concern expands progressively through these chapters. Our inquiry recapitulates the course of development into moral maturity

Introduction to Philosophy: Aesthetic Theory and Practice
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating

Aesthetic Theory and Practice offers fresh perspectives on canonical and emerging topics in aesthetics, and also brings attention to a number of culturally sensitive topics that are customarily silenced in introductions to philosophical aesthetics. The papers are heterogeneous in terms of length and degrees of difficulty, inviting the reader into the study of contemporary aesthetics, which spans a lifetime.

This collection is co-created thanks to contributions from the Americas, Japan and China, Australia and Austria, England and France, Italy, Germany and Ethiopia. It is not surprising, therefore, that all eleven chapters adopt active critical and often multicultural perspectives, so as to evaluate aesthetics in relation to the tradition, its cultural potential, and the messy, geopolitical circumstances of the 21st century.
